Buyer's guide

Choosing an engagement ring, from the shape to her size

Shape, lab or natural, carat, grades, setting, her size and the metal, from the listings live on this page and the year's sales

Buying an engagement ring is seven decisions: the shape, lab or natural, the carat, what the grades mean, the setting, her size, the metal. This page takes them in that order, the way a jeweler would across the counter, the answer first and the reasons after it. Two rings in three here are 14K, most centers that state it are lab-grown and 2 carats or more, and marquise is the shape that sold.

The counts by shape are in the table below, what each shape sold in its note. Every count below is from the 244 pieces live here on September 21, 2026 and what this page sold in the year to that day; prices are on the listings.

Shapes: which engagement ring shape to buy

Start with the shape she already wears; marquise is what sold here, 48 percent of the money in the year, while round is on the most listings, 50. Her rings and earrings say round or long, and yellow, white or rose, before any count on this page does. Round is the classic and sits compact; oval, marquise and pear spread across the finger and look larger than a round of the same weight; emerald and radiant face up about even with a round. A marquise, pear or princess has points where a diamond chips first, so look for a prong capping each point. The marquise money rests on one design in four sizes of center; the shape counts are in the table below and what each shape sold is in its note.

Lab or natural: lab-grown vs natural diamond engagement rings

Both are real diamonds; grade for grade the grown stone costs a fraction, and lab took 86 percent of this page's money in the year. They are the same carbon graded on the same letters; one was grown, the other mined. The mined stone stays scarce. Neither is the wrong buy. On this page lab centers run larger, a median 2.58 carats against 1.15 for natural; 117 rings state a lab center, 65 a natural one and 62 neither. The Origin filter above the grid lists fewer rings than state an origin, since some say it on another line; where a listing says neither, the desk knows.

Carat: how many carats an engagement ring should be

Two carats and up is what buyers here chose, 58 percent of this page's money in the year; the median center here is 2.02 carats. That 58 percent split about evenly between 2 to 2.99 carats and 3 and up, and 1 to 1.99 carats took 26 percent. Of the 164 rings stating a center weight, 103 are 2 carats or more. Read the center carat, not the total carat weight, which adds the side stones and says nothing about the center. A one-carat round is about 6.5 mm across.

Color and clarity: what the diamond grades mean

D through G reads white and VS or better is clean to the naked eye; most centers here grade that high, 126 of 148 and 123 of 151. Both counts are of the rings stating a grade, color first. Color is a letter: D, E and F are graded colorless and look alike to the eye; G through J are near colorless and read white once set, sooner in yellow or rose gold than in white metal, where a tint shows first. Clarity is what a grader finds at ten times magnification, cleanest first: flawless and internally flawless, then VVS, VS and SI, the 1 in each pair cleaner than the 2. VS and above are clean to the naked eye; SI1 usually is, SI2 often is not. On the 28 SI stones, ask the desk what shows. Cut, the fourth C, is how well the stone is faceted: the four Cs article. Whether a report backs a given center, and from which lab: ask the desk. The Clarity filter narrows the grid to the grades you pick.

Settings: solitaire, halo, hidden halo, three stone and pave

A solitaire is one stone on a band and is the setting named most here; prongs hold nearly every center, 220 of 244. See all 28 solitaires. Halo is in 19 titles, 7 of them a hidden halo; 172 name no style. A halo rings the center with small stones so it reads larger; a hidden halo sits under the center, seen from the side. Three stone flanks the center; toi et moi is two stones side by side; pave sets small stones down the band; cathedral arches the band up to the stone; a bezel wraps the stone in metal. Prongs show the most stone and ask the most care, since the tips catch on knitwear and wear thin, so have a jeweler check them every year or two. A wedding band comes next, and the setting decides how it sits: a high-set stone on a straight shank lets a straight band sit flush; a low stone, a halo or a wide head may want a curved band. Ask the desk whether a straight band sits flush with the ring you pick.

Size: how to find her ring size without asking

Measure a ring she wears on the ring finger of either hand; size 7 was bought most here, then 6 and 5, and a third were half sizes. Set it on the ring sizer on our men's rings page, which measures any hand, or trace its inside on paper for the desk, and say which hand; the two can run about a half size apart. A broad band grips more of the finger, so give it the half size above. Sizes 5 through 8 in half sizes are on nearly every ring here, 4 to 4.5 and 8.5 to 9 on about half, and where her size is not on the listing the desk makes the ring to it; ask about the wait. Measure to the half. If it must be a guess, go a half size large: taking metal out of a shank is a smaller job than adding it. Most plain shanks resize about two sizes either way; bands set the whole way round often cannot, and the refund policy counts resizing as custom work, so a resized ring cannot be returned. Settle the size first.

Metal and buying: 14K, 18K or platinum, custom and returns

Pick 14K unless she wants 18K's richer yellow or platinum's weight; two rings in three here are 14K and it took 83 percent of the money in the year. 18K is one ring in four here and took 17 percent; it marks more easily than 14K. Platinum is one in twelve; it stays white on its own, is the heaviest on the hand, scratches sooner than gold and does not thin over decades. White gold is rhodium plated and re-plated. Karat is the gold share: 14K is 58.3 percent gold, 18K is 75; the rest is on the men's rings guide. The ring itself is light, a median 4 grams; the stone is the buy. Any ring here can be made in her size and metal, set with the stone she wants, or built from her drawing at our own bench on 47th Street: a personal jeweler quotes it before you pay, by a text to the desk, a call to 212-872-9692 or the live chat. Returns follow the refund policy: eligible merchandise back new, unworn and unaltered within 14 calendar days of confirmed delivery, less a 5 percent restocking fee; resizing and anything made for the buyer are final sale, layaway is store credit only, and whether a ring made to her size counts as made for you is the desk's call, so ask before you order. Under the shipping policy an in-stock ring usually ships within 2 to 5 business days, insured; a ring made to her size takes longer; give the desk your date. Pay over time at the checkout is Shop Pay installments, Affirm, Afterpay or Acima. The report, a center swap, engraving, a matching band and any service question: call 212-872-9692; if anything is wrong, ask for a manager.

Shape is each listing's center diamond cut, the same as this page's Shape filter, or the title where that is blank, over the 244 rings live on September 21, 2026. The median carat is of that shape's rings that state a center weight, the count in parentheses. The origin cells count the rings that state lab-grown or natural. The count beside each Where to look collection is that collection's own live total on the same day, a separate count from the shape column, so it can sit above or below it. What each shape sold: this page's titles among the store's 400 best-selling ring titles over the twelve months ending September 21, 2026, 96 titles and 1,068 rings in all, each share that shape's part of the money those titles took. Marquise 582 rings and 48 percent, 406 of them one design in four sizes of center; radiant 82 and 9; pear 70 and 7; cushion 60 and 7; oval 45 and 6; emerald 47 and 5; round 18 and 3; princess 3 and about 1; baguette, 58 and 4, and heart, 17 and 1, have no row; 86 rings and 8 percent named no shape. By origin: lab-grown 926 rings and 86 percent, natural 22 and 4, unstated 120 and 10. By karat: 14K 933 and 83 percent, 18K 134 and 17, one ring stating no karat; no platinum ring sold among those titles. By center weight: 2 to 2.99 carats about 30 percent of the money and 3 and up about 29, 58 together; 1 to 1.99 26, under 1 about 1, no carat stated 15. The sizes bought in the Size section are read from the size on each order, 848 of 892 rings with a size, a smaller base than these totals.

Questions we get at the counter

What shape engagement ring should I buy?

The shape she already wears; here marquise sold most, 48 percent of this page's money in the year, and round is on the most listings, 50. Round sits compact and is the classic; oval, marquise and pear spread across the finger and look larger per carat; emerald and radiant face up about even with a round. The marquise money rests on one design in four center sizes. A marquise, pear or princess has points that want a prong on each.

Lab-grown or natural diamond for an engagement ring?

Both are real; lab is what sells here, 86 percent of this page's money in the year, and grade for grade it costs a fraction of a mined stone. The same carbon, graded on the same letters; the mined stone stays scarce. Neither is the wrong buy. On this page lab centers run larger, a median 2.58 carats against 1.15 for natural. Which report backs a given center, and from which lab: ask the desk.

How much should an engagement ring cost?

What you spend is yours; what a ring costs is mostly the center stone: its carat, cut, color and clarity, and whether it is lab-grown or natural, which at the same size is a fraction of the price. The setting is the smaller part: the gold by grams and karat, or platinum, plus the side stones and the bench work. On this page lab centers run larger for the money, and two carats and up is what most buyers chose. Read the center carat, the grades and the origin on the listing, then let a jeweler price the ring you like on the day you are buying: 212-872-9692 or the live chat.

How many carats should an engagement ring be?

Two carats and up: that is 58 percent of this page's money in the year, against 26 percent for 1 to 1.99 carats. The median center here is 2.02 carats; lab centers run 2.58, natural 1.15. Read the center carat, not the total carat weight, which adds the side stones. A one-carat round is about 6.5 mm across.

What do the color and clarity grades mean?

Color grades how white the stone is, D whitest; clarity grades how clean it is at ten times magnification; most centers here are D through G, VS or better. D, E and F are colorless; G through J read white once set. Cleanest first: flawless, VVS, VS, SI; VS is clean to the naked eye, SI2 often shows. Of those stating a grade, 126 of 148 are D through G and 123 of 151 VS or better; on the 28 SI stones, ask the desk what shows.

How do I find her ring size without asking?

A ring she wears on the ring finger of either hand gives it; size 7 sold most here, then 6 and 5, a third in half sizes. Measure it on the ring sizer on our men's rings page, or trace its inside on paper for the desk, and say which hand; the two can run about a half size apart. A broad band fits tighter, so give it the half size above. Guessing, go a half size large.

Can an engagement ring be resized?

Most can, about two sizes either way on a plain shank, but a resized ring cannot be returned, so order her size. The exceptions are bands with no plain metal to cut, stones or pave the whole way round. The desk says yes or no, how far and the charge before you buy. The refund policy lists ring resizing as custom work, so it is final sale.

14K, 18K or platinum for an engagement ring?

14K for every day; it is two rings in three here and took 83 percent of the money in the year, 18K the other 17. 18K is a richer yellow that marks more easily. Platinum stays white on its own, is the heaviest on the hand, scratches sooner than gold and does not thin over decades; no platinum ring here was among the store's best sellers in the year. The Metal Purity filter shows one metal alone.

Can I return an engagement ring, and how fast does it ship?

Yes: a ring bought as listed and sent back new, unworn and unaltered within 14 calendar days of confirmed delivery is returnable, less a 5 percent restocking fee. That is the refund policy; resizing and anything made for you are final sale, layaway is store credit. Clear the return with the desk first, ship on the store's insured label only, and its cost comes off the refund. In stock, it usually ships within 2 to 5 business days, insured; made to her size, the desk quotes the wait.
