Find her month first, then choose the shape. A small heart is the easy pair for every day, and hearts were close to half of what sold here in the year. Most of the page is sapphire flowers, and sapphire in any color is September's stone. Nearly every pair is 14K gold in yellow, white or rose. Few listings say if a colored stone is mined or lab-grown, so ask us first.
Months: birthstone earrings for every month, January to November
Every month from January through November has at least one pair here. September has by far the most, since sapphire fills the page. The table below counts the pairs for each month and what sold.
December is the gap. Its stones, turquoise and tanzanite, are not in this case. Plenty of jewelers now count blue topaz for December as well, and two of the hearts here are blue topaz, so a December gift can start there.
Sapphire: pink, blue and red sapphire flower earrings for September
Every color of sapphire counts for September, so pick the color she likes. Most sapphire pairs here are flowers, petals of small round stones, often with small diamonds. The petals come in pink, blue, purple, green, yellow and orange. Eleven of the flowers are named for a country, their petals in its flag's colors.
Red is the one to watch. Ruby and sapphire are one mineral, and red is the color the trade calls ruby. So for a July birthday, choose a pair whose title says ruby, never one called red sapphire.
Hearts: small heart birthstone earrings in garnet, topaz and peridot
Start with a heart for a small pair she can wear daily. The hearts measure about 6 mm across. Most weigh a little over a gram. Garnet, amethyst, aquamarine, peridot, pink tourmaline and citrine are all here, with topaz in white, blue and Swiss blue. Of the hearts, the garnet pair sold most in the year.
Size: small or large flower earrings, 9 mm or 11 mm across
Choose small for a first pair. A flower titled small or mini is 9 mm across. It weighs about 2 grams. One titled large is 11 mm, and it reads from across a room. Flowers under 10 mm across sold more than four times as many pairs as the wider ones in the year.
A few pairs run bigger. Four measure 20 to 33 mm top to bottom. Most of those weigh more than 10 grams. The single hoop is 44 mm wide.
Gold and diamonds: 14K or 18K birthstone earrings with diamonds
Choose 14K, the gold on nearly every pair. Only seven are 18K. On most listings the gold color is yours to pick, yellow, white or rose.
Nearly half the pairs set small diamonds next to the colored stone. When a listing gives their origin, it says natural, and most are G color, VS2 clarity. Three more pairs are lab-grown diamond, April's stone. No listing names its back, and only a handful tell you whether the sapphire or garnet was dug up or lab-made.
