Nearly half of the 295 chains on this page are diamond or gemstone tennis chains, 133 of them. The other half are fine plain links: Miami Cuban, wheat, cable, Franco, box and rope first. About six in seven are 14K gold and one is platinum. All but three are also marked for men, so this wall is shared with the men's chain pages and serves anyone who wants a gold chain under 3 mm.

Take a box, wheat or cable for a fine everyday chain, a rope or a thin Miami Cuban for one seen on its own. Of the 295 chains live here, 152 are plain links, and 120 of the 151 that list a width are under 3 mm.

• Box: square links, 16 here, all 14K, the middle one 1.3 mm; the finest chain on the page is a 0.45 mm box.
• Wheat: braided links, 20 here, the middle one 1.5 mm.
• Cable: plain round links, 20 here, the middle one 1.9 mm; six of the ten 18K chains here are cables.
• Rope: 13 here, 2 to 3 mm, and by the piece the top seller from this page in the past year, 378 of 1,155.
• Franco and Miami Cuban: 17 and 24 here, all thin, 1 to 3 mm and 1.9 to 2.6 mm.
• Curb, moon cut, anchor, rolo, Figaro and palm: smaller runs, 2 to 10 listings each; the 14K 3 mm palm link sold 40 in the year.

Tennis chains: the women's diamond tennis chain by pointer size, lab grown or natural, and the sapphire and opal chains

Choose a tennis chain by its pointer size: 7, 10 and 15 pointers are the common ones here, 34 of the 67 tennis titles that print a size. Tennis chains are 133 of the 295 live here, and this page's titles took 99 of the store's 112 tennis chain sales in the past year: this is the store's tennis wall. Diamond is in 97 titles, sapphire in 28, opal in 5 and ruby in 3. Thirty descriptions state a carat total, 2.60 to 37.80 carats; the listing states the carats and grades where the desk has them. Marked on the listing, 57 are lab-grown and six natural; the rest do not say, so ask the desk. Most of the diamond tennis chains that sold here were lab-grown by their listing; two pieces were natural.

Metal and colour: 14K or 10K gold chain for women, the 18K, 21K and platinum pieces, yellow, white or rose gold

14K for most women: 255 of the 295 here, and two pieces in three of what this page sold in the year, for about seven eighths of the money. 10K is 24 listings, one in three pieces sold for about a tenth of the money. The 10 in 18K are cables, anchors, a rolo and the ball link; the 5 in 21K are two wheats, a rope, a cable and a Figaro. One tennis chain is platinum. The karat numbers: the men's gold chains guide.

Colour: 126 listings offer yellow, white and rose on the menu, 65 yellow only. Yellow was 87 percent of the pieces sold here. White gold was 10 percent of the pieces and 20 percent of the money, the white tennis chains mostly. Rose sits on 132 menus and sold 11 pieces. Width and weight: how thick a women's gold chain is, and how many grams a thin gold chain weighs

Under 3 mm for a fine chain; from 3 mm up is mostly tennis. The middle chain here is 3.0 mm and 18.5 grams as listed, over the 286 that print each. Under 3 mm took 82 percent of this page's sales by the piece in the year, and 2 to 2.9 mm alone took 64 percent. Store-wide that band is 37 percent of the chain pieces: this page buys a full band thinner.

The middle weight by link, as listed: box 3.4 grams, wheat 4.0, cable 5.0, rope 6.0, Franco 9.3, Miami Cuban 11.0, tennis 41.5. A tennis chain runs about 2.01 grams an inch over the 115 that state one length, stones and settings in the figure. On 66 listings one weight sits beside a length menu without naming the length it covers; eight print no weight. For those, ask the desk.

Solid or hollow: solid gold chain vs hollow on a thin chain, and which lasts

Solid for a chain worn every day or under a pendant; hollow for a light chain worn with care. By title or description, 83 chains here say solid and 21 hollow; 191 say neither, the tennis chains and the wheat among them. Every hollow title here is 3 mm or under. The middle solid chain lists 11.5 grams, the middle hollow 4.9.

Hollow titles were a third of the chains sold here in the year, for about an eighth of the money. The two 2 mm hollow ropes, 10K and 14K, sold 207 between them. Length: what length gold chain a woman wears, 16, 18, 20 or 22 inches, and what sold here

Twenty inches for a fine chain, 22 for a tennis chain. Of the 1,114 chains this page sold in the year with a length named, 20 inches took 35 percent. Then came 22 at 28 percent and the most money, 24 at 17, 18 at 12 and 16 at 5. Store-wide, chains go out at 22 first, so this page runs a step shorter.

By link: a fine rope, cable or wheat went out at 20, a box chain at 18, a Miami Cuban, Franco, curb or tennis chain at 22. On the listings, 88 offer a real choice of length, from menus running 16 to 30 inches; eight tell no length at all, so ask the desk.

Buying: a chain for a pendant, unisex, shortening, stock, shipping and returns

A fine chain goes best at 20 inches; a tennis chain, a Miami Cuban or a Franco at 22. In this page's sales for the year, 20 inches was 35 percent of the pieces with a length and 22 was 28 percent, with the most money. Which gold chain is best for hanging a pendant?

A box, cable or wheat under 2 mm for a light pendant, a solid link for a heavy one. Of the 151 plain links here that list a width, 48 are under 2 mm. As listed, the middle box chain is 1.3 mm and 3.4 grams, the wheat 1.5 mm and 4.0, the cable 1.9 mm and 5.0. Can a woman wear a men's gold chain, or are these unisex?

Yes: a chain is the same link at the same width whoever wears it. Of the 295 chains live here, 292 are also marked for men and sit on the men's chain pages, 105 are marked unisex, and nine descriptions say they suit men and women alike. Only three are marked for women alone. Some descriptions here are written to men; the link and its width are what count.

How big are the diamonds on a women's tennis chain?

Of the 67 tennis titles naming a size, 34 are 7, 10 or 15 pointers, the common sizes here; the full run is 2 to 100 pointers. A pointer is a hundredth of a carat per stone, so a 15 pointer sets 0.15 carat stones. Thirty descriptions state a total, 2.60 to 37.80 carats. Will a thin gold chain hold up to everyday wear?

A solid one is built for it; a hollow one wants a gentler hand. Here 83 chains read solid in the title or description and 21 hollow, every hollow title 3 mm or under. As listed, the middle solid chain weighs 11.5 grams and the middle hollow 4.9; the seven chains under 1 mm list a middle 1.4 grams. About 18.5 grams as listed for the middle chain here, over 286 weighed. Can a gold chain be shortened, and can I return it if the length is wrong?

Ask the desk: no listing here says a chain can be resized, so whether yours can be shortened, and the charge, is theirs to answer. On the menus, 88 chains here offer a choice of lengths and 37 list one. Fourteen calendar days is the window to return a chain bought as listed, kept unworn and unaltered; the refund policy deducts its five percent restocking fee.
