How to choose a men's Rolex watch

Choose dress or sport, then the case size for your wrist, the metal and the papers

First choose between a dress watch and a sport watch. The Datejust and the Day-Date dress up, and the Submariner and the GMT-Master II are made for the water and the airport. The Datejust is the one our buyers choose most. Take the 41 on a broad wrist. A slim wrist wears the 36. Every watch here is pre-owned and final sale, so ask the desk everything before you pay.

The model: men's Rolex Datejust, Day-Date, Submariner or GMT-Master II

Choose dress or sport before you look at dials. The Datejust and the gold Day-Date are the dress watches, and most men who buy a Rolex from us take one of the two. The Submariner is the dive watch, with a turning bezel to time the dive. The GMT-Master II reads a second time zone off its 24-hour bezel, and the Sky-Dweller adds an annual calendar. Buy the one you will wear on a Tuesday.

Wrist size: 36 mm or 41 mm Rolex for a man

Measure your wrist with a strip of paper before you pick a case. Under seven inches, the 36 sits flat and looks right. From seven inches up, go to the 41, which fills the wrist the way a modern watch does. The 40 mm sport models wear close to it. Do not write the 36 off as small. More of our buyers chose it than any other size, even though we list more 41s today. The Sky-Dweller and the Sea-Dweller run bigger still and want a broad wrist.

The metal: steel, two-tone or 18K gold men's Rolex

Start with steel if the watch will go everywhere with you. Rolex calls it Oystersteel, and it is about half of what we have for sale. Two-tone puts yellow gold or Everose, Rolex's rose gold, on the bezel and the center links. Solid 18K gold is mostly the Day-Date, which Rolex never makes in steel. The five-link Jubilee is the dressier bracelet and the flat Oyster the tougher one.

Card and box: men's Rolex with papers, or the watch alone

Read the card-and-papers block in the description before you fall for the dial. About six in ten of the watches for sale still have their Rolex card or papers. The rest are sold as the watch alone, and on nearly every listing the box is an extra you add. The card carries the serial and the dealer who first sold the watch, a paper trail rather than proof. Our watch team inspects every watch in person before it is listed, card or no card. Keep the card safe, because the next buyer will ask for it.

Final sale: buying a pre-owned men's Rolex on 47th Street

Every Rolex here is final sale, because the store's refund policy names watches among the items it will not take back. So settle every doubt before you pay. Two watches bought in the year had no case size in their titles.

Questions we get in the store

Which men's Rolex should I buy first?

A Datejust in steel or two-tone. It goes from a suit to a weekend, and our buyers took it more than any other model. Let your wrist pick the case. The 41 fills a broad wrist. The 36 sits right on a slim one.

Is a 36 mm Rolex too small for a man?

No. About half the men's Rolex we sold in the year were 36 mm, more than any other size. Until 2009 it was the only men's Datejust size. It still suits any wrist under seven inches.

Submariner or GMT-Master II for a man?

Take the Submariner if you want a dive watch, and the GMT-Master II if you travel and want a second time zone. Every GMT here is 40 mm. The Submariners run 40 or 41 mm, and most of both are steel.

Is a two-tone Rolex too flashy for a man?

No. Men bought more two-tone than steel from us. The gold sits on the bezel and the center links, so it reads warmer than steel and quieter than solid gold. Those gold parts pick up scratches sooner than the steel.

Does the Day-Date come in steel?

No. Rolex makes the Day-Date only in precious metal, so every one here is 18K yellow gold or Everose. Nearly all wear the President bracelet, and one listing says its bracelet is aftermarket. Its dial spells out the day of the week.

Which Rolex suits a big wrist?

A 41 mm Datejust or Submariner serves most broad wrists. The Sea-Dweller and the Yacht-Master II wear largest here, both at 44 mm. The Sky-Dweller comes next, at 42. Measure first, then set each case in the table against your wrist.

Can I return a Rolex bought here?
