How to buy a women's cross pendant or cross necklace

Choose the shape and the gold first, then the size and whether you need a chain

Start with a plain cross in 14K gold, under an inch wide, in the color she already wears. That is the cross bought most from us, and it goes on every morning. Then decide about the chain. Most crosses are sold as the cross alone, and the sets that bring one sell best at 18 inches. A diamond in the title is a real diamond, but ask us whether it was mined or grown.

The motif: cross, crucifix, ankh and nail cross pendants for women

Take the plain cross. It is the bare shape, no figure, and nearly nine buyers in ten here leave with one. A crucifix carries the body of Christ and runs a little heavier. The ankh is the Egyptian cross with a loop. The nail cross is two nails laid crosswise, and the small one set with tiny diamonds sells best. Many of these crosses sit on men's cross pendants too.

Metal: 14K, 10K or 18K gold cross pendant in yellow, white or rose, or sterling silver

Take 14K for a cross you wear every day. It is the gold most buyers here chose. 10K is paler and a bit harder, and 18K is the deeper yellow.

Size: how big a women's cross pendant is, mini and small crosses

Stay under an inch wide. Nearly every cross bought here does. The middle cross is 0.80 inches across and nearly twice as long as it is wide.

A mini or small cross is about half an inch wide and weighs next to nothing. Two pieces in five sold were one of those, a good first cross or a gift. Go wider for a cross meant to be seen, and read its grams, because a heavy one wants a stronger chain. Ask the desk whether a listed drop takes in the bail.

The chain: what chain and length a women's cross hangs on, and whether one comes with it

Most crosses here are sold as the cross alone, none says a chain comes with it, so plan on a fine chain. The sets bring their own, and most let you choose the length.
