How to choose lab grown diamond jewelry

Read the grades first, then choose the ring, the studs, the tennis row or the pendant

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, grown in a lab instead of mined, and you choose one the same way. Check its color and clarity on the listing, then pick the piece and the size of the stone. The grades: lab grown diamond color, clarity and certificates

Read two grades on a listing before anything else. Color starts at D, which is colorless, and warms as the letters go down, so D to F show no tint at all. Clarity tells you how clean the stone is, and VS means a flaw hides until a loupe finds it. About two listings in three here print both grades, and most of those read D to F with VS or better. For a report from a grading lab, ask us first, since no listing names one. A few pieces carry pink, blue, yellow, green or black lab-grown diamonds, named in their titles. Engagement rings: lab grown diamond engagement rings

Choose the shape from the rings your partner wears now, and know that the marquise is the shape buyers here chose most, six rings in ten. A 1.50 carat marquise was the single piece bought most here. The centers most buyers chose run from 1.5 to 3 carats. Nearly every ring sold was 14K gold, and a few come in 18K or platinum. Stud earrings: lab grown diamond stud earrings

Buy one carat a stone. No stud size sold more here, and about six pairs in ten sold were that size or bigger. A title's ctw weighs both ears together, which makes a 2 ctw pair one carat on each. Round sold best, and the Portuguese cut, with its extra rows of facets, came next. Most pairs are 14K, and a few come in silver or 18K. Tennis: lab grown diamond tennis chains and bracelets

Choose the stone size first, then the length. A title gives the size of each stone as a pointer, from 1.5 to 80 points here, and the few bigger rows give carats a stone instead. Most rows are 3 to 5 mm wide. Every one is 14K but two in platinum. Most chains here come in 22 inches. Most bracelets come in 7 inches. The chain bought most is a fine 2.2 mm row. Pick the pendant with its chain in mind, since a heavy piece wants a sturdy chain. Most pendants here are 14K, with some 10K and a few silver. More than a quarter of them are crosses. Compare two pendants by their grams and their carats of lab-grown diamonds, since nearly every listing gives both. Ask us whether a chain comes with the one you want before you order. Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown stone is diamond through and through, crystallized carbon like a mined one, graded on the same color and clarity scale. Only a gem lab's instruments can tell the two apart.

Do lab grown diamonds come with a certificate?

Do lab grown diamonds get cloudy or change color?

No. A lab-grown diamond keeps its color and its polish in normal wear, because it is as hard and stable as a mined stone. Lotion and skin oil dull it for a while, and warm soapy water with a soft brush brings the sparkle back.

Start at one carat a stone, the size bought most here. A pair marked 2 ctw is that size, one carat on each ear. For something quieter, half a carat a stone makes the everyday pair.

How many carats should a lab grown engagement ring have?

Look at 1.5 to 3 carats for the center. About four engagement rings in five sold here held a stone in that range. The 1.50 carat center sold most of all. Read the center stone's carat, since some totals count side stones.

What gold are these lab grown diamonds set in?

Mostly 14K. Nearly four pieces in five here are that gold, and it keeps prongs tight through daily wear. You will also find 10K, 18K, platinum and silver, so check the metal on the listing before you choose.

What does a pointer mean on a tennis chain?

The pointer is how big each stone in the row is, in hundredths of a carat. Ten points make a tenth of a carat and fifty make half. A higher pointer gives a wider, heavier row.
