The short answer
- Your ring size comes down to millimeters. Wrap a paper strip around the base of the finger and find its length in the chart: 52 mm is about a 6, 57 mm about an 8.
- Each whole size adds about 0.8 mm across the inside; a half size, half that.
- The average ring size for women is about a 6.5. Two in three of the sizes buyers picked on our women's rings were 5.5 to 7.5.

Ring size chart: US sizes 3 to 15 in millimeters
Around the finger is what your paper strip reads, and in most of Europe that number, rounded, is the size: a US 7 is about a 54.

How to measure your ring size at home
You need a paper strip about a quarter inch wide, a fine pen and a ruler that reads millimeters.
- Measure at the end of the day. Fingers swell with heat and shrink with cold, so a cold morning reads small.
- Wrap the strip snug around the base of the finger the ring is for, and mark where the end meets it.
- Lay it flat on the ruler and read the millimeters to your mark.
- Find that number in the chart's around-the-finger column, or divide it by 3.14 for the inside diameter: 54 mm is about 17.2 mm across, a size 7.
- Check the knuckle. If it reads bigger than the base, lean toward the bigger number.
- Measure twice, on two days if you can, and take the larger reading.
With a ring that already fits, measure straight across the inside, edge to edge, and read the chart's diameter column. It has to be the same finger on the same hand: the two hands can run about a half size apart.

Printable ring sizer
Print this page at 100 percent and check that the bar measures 50 mm. Lay a ring that fits on the circles: your size is the circle whose outer edge just meets the inside of the ring, and between two, you are the half size.
Each circle's outer edge is the inside diameter of its US size, true to size only when printed at 100 percent.
The average ring size for women
About a 6.5, from the women's rings we sold in the twelve months to September 25, 2026, counting only rings where the buyer changed the size from the one the page opens on. The middle pick was a 6.5, a 7 was picked most, then a 6, and about one in three picks was a half size.

Buying for her without asking? Borrow a ring she wears on the same finger and measure across the inside, or text the desk a tracing. If you must guess, go a half size large: taking metal out of a shank is a smaller job than adding it.

How a ring should fit
It goes over the knuckle with a little push and comes off with a little twist; a deep dent means too tight. A wide band fits tighter, so in the trade's experience go up about a half size. Measure the pinky itself, and size for an ordinary warm day.

How do I measure my ring size with a string?
Wrap it snug around the base of the finger, mark where it meets, and read the millimeters against the chart. String can stretch, so paper reads truer.
What is my ring size in UK or European sizes?
In most of Europe the size is the millimeters around the finger, rounded: a US 7 is about a 54. In the UK a US 7 is about an N½. Charts differ by up to a half size, so tell the desk your size and where it came from.
Should I size up or down between two sizes?
The larger one, and about a half size up for a wide band. A ring a touch big still goes over the knuckle; a tight one may not. A jeweler can usually move a plain band about two sizes; a band set with stones all the way round usually cannot be resized.
