How to buy a marquise engagement ring
Choose the carat and a setting that guards the points, then the gold and her size
Start with the center, and start at the 1.50 carat ring. It sold more than any other piece in the store over the last ninety days. A marquise reads larger than a round of equal weight, so you get length for the carat. Make sure both points sit under metal, since the tips chip first. Take yellow gold if she has no favorite, and give us her measured size before you order.

1. Set the screen with a card
Lay any bank, debit or ID card flat on the screen, standing tall, so its short edge runs across the box, and move the slider until the box is exactly as wide as the card. No bank card? A driver's license, metro card, gift card or hotel key is the same size. Without any card the circle and the ruler are not to scale: measure your paper strip with a real ruler and set that number in millimeters on the strip slider, then send it to the desk.
2. Measure
Take a ring that fits the same finger of the same hand the new ring will live on; every finger is its own size. Set it on the screen over the circle and move the slider until the circle just fills the inside of the ring.

Wrap a strip of paper snug around the base of the finger, where the ring sits, and mark where it meets. If your knuckle is bigger, wrap it there too and take a size between the two, nearer the knuckle. Lay the strip along the ruler's right edge from the 0. Move the slider until the gold line sits on your mark.

What is a marquise cut diamond?
A marquise is a brilliant-cut diamond shaped like a boat, full in the middle and pointed at both ends. At one carat it measures about 10 mm by 5, so it looks larger than a round of the same weight.
Is a marquise a good engagement ring?
Yes, if she wants a stone that looks big for its carat and makes her finger look longer. Check two things before you pay. The points should sit under a prong or a halo, and the bow tie should look faint as the stone moves.
What carat marquise engagement ring should I buy?

Yellow, white or rose gold for a marquise ring?
Yellow is the safe pick, and two in three marquise rings sold here went out in yellow gold. Every ring lists yellow and white, and about half add rose. The carat-titled rings skip rose, so ask us if she wants it.
