How to choose a round engagement ring

Start with the carat, since here it decides grown or mined, then the setting and her size

Choose the carat first, because here it picks the stone for you. Every center of two carats or more is lab-grown, and every mined center stays under two. So for a big round, take it grown, in E or F color. If the diamond has to come out of the ground, look near one carat. Set it in 14K for a ring she never takes off, and order her measured size.

Center size: how many carats for a round engagement ring, and how big it looks

Start at one carat if she wants a round people notice, about 6.5 mm across the top. The table sets each weight beside its width. Color and clarity: the grades that matter on a round diamond

A round forgives a grade: its many facets hide a faint tint and a small mark better than an emerald cut. Most labs grade cut only on a round, and no listing here prints it, so ask us for it and take Excellent or Ideal. Ask too where a ring prints no color or clarity.

The setting: round solitaire, halo, three-stone and bridal set rings

A solitaire, one stone on a plain band, shows the round best, and most solitaires here are grown, from two carats to four. A halo rings the center with small diamonds so it reads a size larger. The best seller is a halo sold with its band, and eight rings come as bridal sets. Three are three-stone rings, and one is an anniversary band. Buying the band later, ask whether a straight one sits flush.

Take 14K. It is harder than 18K, and most rings sold here were 14K. Most gold rings offer yellow, white or rose, and three come in platinum only. About 6.5 mm across the top, the width of a pencil eraser. A half-carat round is closer to 5.2 mm, and a 2 carat one runs near 8.2 mm. An oval or a pear of equal weight looks a little bigger, being longer.

Lab-grown or natural for a round engagement ring?

Lab-grown if she wants two carats or more, since every center that big here is grown. Natural if the stone must be mined, and then look near one carat. Both are real diamond, and only a lab instrument can tell them apart.

Solitaire or halo for a round diamond?

A halo if she wants the round to look bigger, a solitaire if she wants the stone alone on a plain band. A halo's ring of small stones adds width. The ring bought most here in the year was a halo bridal set.

What color and clarity should a round diamond have?

G color or better looks white once set, and SI1 or better usually looks clean. Nearly every grown center here is D to F and VS or cleaner. The mined centers mostly print G or H and SI, so ask about any SI2.

Four prongs or six on a round diamond?

Four prongs show more of the stone and give its outline a soft square look. Six hold the diamond if one prong bends and keep it looking round. Either works on a ring worn daily, if a jeweler checks the tips each year.

14K, 18K or platinum for a round engagement ring?

14K, for a ring worn every day. It shrugs off knocks better than 18K, and most rings sold here in the year were 14K. 18K is a richer yellow that marks sooner. Platinum stays white and weighs more, and three rings come in it.
