How to buy men's diamond wedding bands

One row or eternity, the setting, the metal and the size, settled before you pay

Settle one row or all the way round before anything else. A single row of diamonds across the top leaves plain metal underneath, so a jeweler can still size the band, and many bands here are built that way. Take channel if you work with your hands, and 14K for every day. Know your size before you order, because a resized band cannot come back.

Find your ring size in a minute

Your screen becomes the sizer. On most phones it is already true size, and a quarter lets you check. Then measure the finger you will wear the ring on, with a ring that already fits that finger or with a strip of paper.

1. Check the screen with a quarter

Lay a quarter flat on the screen, over the coin, and move the slider until the coin on the screen is exactly the size of yours. No quarter? Then the circle and the ruler are not to scale: measure your paper strip with a real ruler and set that number in millimeters on the strip slider, then send it to the desk.

2. Measure

Take a ring that fits the same finger of the same hand the new ring will live on; every finger is its own size. Set it on the screen over the circle and move the slider until the circle just fills the inside of the ring.

Settings: channel, prong, bezel or pave on a men's diamond band

Take a channel setting for a hand that works: the stones sit flush in a groove between two metal rails, so nothing catches. Prong lets the most light in, and it is the setting you see most here. A bezel wraps each stone in a collar of metal, the safest, and pave packs small stones tight for the most sparkle and asks the most care. Take any band off for the gym; a soft brush and soapy water bring the shine back.

Rows: one row, several rows or an eternity band

Buy one row if your size could ever change. The stones run across the top, the back stays plain, and a jeweler has metal to cut. A channel row stretches less than a prong row, since the rails pinch. An eternity band carries stones the whole way around, and most jewelers cannot resize one, so measure twice. A half eternity gives you the look with a bare back. Some bands here double as men's engagement rings.

Carats: total carat weight on a men's wedding band

The carat on a band is every stone added together, not one diamond; where a listing gives no total, ask the desk. Over a channel, one carat is five to nine small stones in a line of light; for a band that shows across the table, look between one and two carats. Every diamond band prints its origin, lab-grown or natural.

Metal: 14K, 18K or platinum, and what a men's band weighs

Take 14K for a band worn every day; most bands here are 14K, and each listing gives its grams. 18K is a warmer yellow and marks sooner. Platinum is the heaviest and the whitest, with no plating to renew, while white gold is plated and gets a fresh coat when it wears thin. For another metal or other stones, ask the desk about a band made to order.

Channel, prong or bezel: which setting for a men's diamond wedding band?

Channel, if you work with your hands. The stones sit flush between two rails and nothing catches. Prong shows the most light and is the setting seen most here. Bezel is the lowest and the safest, a metal collar round each stone.

Can a men's wedding band be resized later?

Most can. A plain band or one row of stones has bare metal at the back to cut; a full eternity band usually cannot. A resize is final, so before you pay, ask a jeweler whether yours is ready-made or made to order: the live chat or 212-872-9692.

14K, 18K or platinum for a men's wedding band?

Plain gold or diamond: which men's wedding band should I get?

Plain gold if you want no stone to loosen, diamonds if you want light. Most bands here carry stones, from the 14K upside-down asscher eternity band to rows of prong-set natural diamonds. High polish shows scratches a pattern hides.

Lab-grown or natural diamonds in a men's wedding band?

Lab-grown comes from a lab, a mined stone from the ground. Lab-grown and natural diamonds of the same grade look the same; a natural diamond costs more. We don't sell diamonds as an investment, and resale value isn't guaranteed for either. Each band's listing prints its origin.

Does his wedding band need to match hers?
