Men's ring size: what men buy, how to measure at home, and what a gold ring weighs

Men's ring size chart

The chart gives the US size, the inside diameter, and the distance around the finger, the number your paper strip reads. The rings are on our men's rings page.

Half sizes sit halfway between two rows; about one in eight of the men's rings we sold was a half size. Each whole size adds about 0.8 mm across the inside and about 2.5 mm around.

No men's ring we sold was a 13 or larger, but nearly nine in ten of our men's ring pages stop their size list at 12 or below (counted September 25, 2026), so for a 13 and up, ask the desk.

How to measure your ring size at home

1. Wait for the end of the day, when your hands are warm. Fingers swell with heat and shrink with cold, so a reading on a cold morning runs small.
2. Cut a strip of paper about a quarter inch wide, or take a piece of string that does not stretch.
3. Wrap it around the base of the finger the ring is for, snug, the way a ring should sit.
4. Mark where the end meets the strip, with a fine pen.
5. Lay the strip flat along a ruler and read the length in millimeters, from the end to your mark. That is the distance around your finger.
6. Find that length in the chart's last column, or divide it by 3.14 for the inside diameter. A strip that reads 57 mm is about 18.1 mm across, a size 8; one that reads 62 mm is about 19.7 mm across, a size 10.
7. Check the knuckle: the ring has to slide over it. Wrap the strip around the knuckle too; if it reads bigger than the base, lean toward the bigger number.
8. Do it twice, on two different days if you can. If the two readings split, take the larger one.

Already own a ring that fits the same finger? Lay it on a ruler and measure straight across the inside, edge to edge, in millimeters. That is the inside diameter; read it against the table. If you land between two sizes, that is what half sizes are for.

Loose or tight: how a men's ring should fit

In our experience at the counter, a ring that fits goes over the knuckle with a little push and comes off with a little twist. On the finger it can turn, but it should not spin on its own or slide up to the knuckle when your hand hangs down.

If it leaves a deep dent, or the finger puffs around it, it is too tight. A ring that feels loose on a winter morning can be right by a summer afternoon; size for an ordinary warm day, not the coldest one.

Wide bands fit tighter

A wide band covers more of the finger, so it fits tighter than a narrow one at the same size. In the trade's experience, go up about a half size for a wide band. To measure for one, cut the strip as wide as the band, so it feels on the finger the way the band will.

The pinky

The pinky is often smaller than the ring finger. Do not take your ring-finger size and guess down: measure the pinky with the same strip, at the end of the day, and check that knuckle too.

Pinky rings were about a third of the men's rings we sold in the twelve months to September 25, 2026, and nine in ten of them were a size from 5 to 7.5. That is a record of what sold, not a size for your hand. The rings are on our pinky rings page.

What a men's gold ring weighs

A gold ring's price is built from the grams, the karat, the day's gold price and the making. The grams are the part you can compare from one ring to the next.

These are the weights our listings state for men's 14K gold rings, by style, counted September 25, 2026. The middle half is the range where half of the listings in that style fall.

Signet, nugget and Cuban rings are not in the table: too few of our 14K listings titled as men's rings carry those names to count them. The Cuban link rings are on our Cuban rings page.

Three things move the weight:

• Size. A larger size uses more gold, so the same ring weighs more at a 12 than at an 8. The weight on a listing is the weight that listing states; for the weight at your size, ask the desk.
• Karat. 14K is 58.3 percent gold and 10K is 41.7 percent, and in the same ring the higher karat weighs a little more; our 10K, 14K and 18K article lays out the difference.
• Width and top. A wide shank or a heavy top adds metal.

Common questions about men's ring size

What is the average ring size for men?

When men picked their own size on a ring-finger ring from us, the middle of their picks was about a 10, and three in four landed from 9 to 11. Size 8 sells more than any other size, but most of those rings sold at the first size on the page. Your paper strip is the answer.

Is a size 9 ring big for men?

No, a 9 is well inside the usual range: three in four of the ring-finger sizes men picked themselves from us were a 9, 10 or 11 or a half size between. A 9 is about 18.9 mm across the inside; it is big only if your finger measures smaller.

Is a 7.5 ring size small for a man?

For a ring finger it is on the small side; for a pinky it is common. A 7.5 is about 17.7 mm across the inside, between a 7 at 17.3 and an 8 at 18.1. Men with slim fingers do wear it on the ring finger, so measure before you call it small.

Is a size 13 ring big for a man?

Yes, it is on the large side. A 13 is about 22.2 mm across the inside, and none of the men's rings we sold in the twelve months to September 25, 2026 was a 13 or larger. If your strip reads 13 or up, ask the desk: text or call 212-872-9692.

How big is a men's size 7 ring?

About 17.3 mm across the inside and about 54 mm around, the length your paper strip would read. It is small for most ring fingers and common on a pinky: a 7 was about 15 percent of the men's rings we sold, and pinky rings carried most of the 5s, 6s and 7s.

How do I guess the ring size for a man?

Borrow before you guess. Take a ring he wears on the same finger, measure straight across the inside in millimeters and read the table. With no ring to borrow, know the record: men who picked their own ring-finger size from us mostly landed on 9 to 11. For a wide band, go up about a half size.

What is a typical ring size for a man?

For the ring finger, 8 to 11: three in four of the ring-finger rings we sold as men's rings were in that range, half sizes included. Pinky rings run smaller, mostly 5 to 7.5. About one in eight of all the men's rings we sold was a half size, so a half size is normal.
