Buyer's guide
How to buy a men's gold chain
The link, the weight, the length and the karat, the way we explain it across the counter on 47th Street
The Miami Cuban built this counter: 717 of the 1,053 men's gold chains here are Cubans. Curb, rope, Franco, anchor, box, cable, wheat, moon cut and Figaro sit behind them, in 10K, 14K and 18K yellow, white and rose gold, from under a millimeter to a 37 mm showpiece, 16 to 36 inches, some made in Italy and some here in New York.
What we say across the glass before a man picks one: which link, solid or hollow, what it should weigh, what length lands where, and which karat. Every count below is from the 1,053 pieces live here on September 20, 2026 and what this page sold in the year to that day; prices are on the listings.

A 5 mm Miami Cuban at 22 inches lands at mid chest, the length most men here wear on its own. In solid 14K it weighs about 42 grams. Across every link here, 243 chains come in 22 inches.

Weights are the middle of our own solid 14K listings, current and recently sold, counted September 20, 2026. Nearly every listing shows its width, length and grams; where one does not, ask the desk.
AI Trax on gold chains: two minutes before you buy
Trax's AI jeweler on karat, hollow versus solid, weight, length and the links men buy most, in two minutes.

Hey there! I'm AI Trax, Trax's AI jeweler. You're on our gold chains page, the collection Trax started with: some links made in Italy, some right here in New York. Two minutes, all reasons.
Karat is how much gold is in the metal. Ten karat wears hardest for the money. Fourteen is the daily-wear pick, color and durability. Eighteen runs richest, and if you have the budget, it's worth it.
Hollow or solid is the next call. Same look, very different gold: our six-millimeter Miami Cuban is twenty-five grams hollow, sixty-four grams solid. And some links are better hollow: a hollow Franco has a beautiful look and can feel even fuller on the neck than a solid one. Every listing says which.
Our chains aren't sold by the gram. But the heavier the chain, the better price per gram you get, and the markup is fair and honest across the board. Want a package deal or a better price? Call, or live chat right from this page.
Length. Eighteen to twenty inches sits at the collarbone and carries a pendant. Twenty-two to twenty-four drops lower and layers. Twenty-six and up is for the big links. We extend or shorten any chain, and our pendants have adjustable clasps that fit even the heavy Cubans.
The ones people buy most: rope, because it sparkles and hides wear. Miami Cuban, the statement. Curb, flat and classic. Franco, square and strong.
Here's why a gold chain is the smartest gold you can wear. It holds its value in the metal, you can trade it in with us any time, and the way the world's economy is going, Trax expects a chain bought today to pay you back. He calls it one of the best buys in jewelry in the past thirty years.
So, pick your karat, hollow or solid for the link you love, and the weight you'll wear. Live chat with a personal jeweler, or call two one two, TRAX, N Y C, for a length, a package deal, or a better price. I'm AI Trax, I'm an AI, and I'm rooting for you.

Counts are the live listings in this collection on September 20, 2026, all colors together. Widths and lengths are what the listings offer; a chain can be shortened or extended at the bench. Where a title does not say solid or hollow, the gram weight on the listing tells you; a few listings carry no weight, so ask. What sold, from the store's chain sales in the twelve months to September 20, 2026, every metal together, silver included: among the sixty best-selling chain titles of that year, the gold ones came to rope 520 pieces, curb 145, Miami Cuban 95, Figaro 68, palm 58, Franco 58 and box 47, hollow 554 pieces, solid 249 and semi-solid 43 where the title said which, and 14K 506 to 10K 485; the single top gold title was the 10K hollow 2 mm rope at 151 pieces, and the 14K 3 mm palm link sold 40, tied for fifth among the gold titles. Of the 2,442 chains sold with a length in that year, gold and silver together: 22 inches 704, 24 inches 675, 20 inches 653, 18 inches 194, 26 inches 130, 28 inches 52, 16 inches 29, 30 inches 5, and none at 32, 34 or 36. Silver chains sell more pieces than gold; this page is gold only.
Questions we get at the counter
What length gold chain should a man get?
Twenty-two inches: the single most bought length, 704 of the 2,442 chains sold here with a length, gold and silver together. Then 24, then 20; the three together were more than eight in ten. Eighteen sits at the collarbone, 20 just below it, 22 at mid chest, 24 at the lower chest; 26 and longer is for the wide links. Between two lengths, take the longer. We extend or shorten any chain, and a shorter chain is less gold, so its price comes down.
Solid or hollow gold chain?
Solid for daily wear or a pendant: at the same width a solid Cuban weighs two to three times a hollow one. Solid is gold all the way through, and the bench can shorten, lengthen and repair it for decades. Hollow is the same look at a lighter weight and a lower price; a hollow Franco can even feel fuller on the neck than a solid one. Fewer than half the titles here say which, 311 solid and 109 hollow; where one does not, the grams do.
How much should a men's gold chain cost?
By its gold: the gram weight, the karat's share of pure gold, and the day's gold price, plus the labor in the link. Two chains of the same width can differ by double because one is hollow, a third to half the gold of the solid one. The grams and the karat are on every listing, so compare chains by grams before you compare tickets; the heavier the chain, the better the price per gram you get here. For the number on the day you are buying, a jeweler quotes it: 212-872-9692 or the live chat.
How wide should a men's gold chain be?
Three to 5 mm worn on its own, under 3 mm for a pendant; by count, under 3 mm is what most men buy here. Three to 5 mm is visible without being loud. Six to 8 mm is a statement. Past 10 mm the chain is the whole look; the middle Cuban here is 12 mm. Width and weight rise together, so read the grams on the listing, not the width.
10K, 14K or 18K gold chain?
14K for daily wear: 58.3 percent gold, the yellow most men picture, hard enough for every day, and 617 of the 1,053 chains here. 10K is 41.7 percent gold, the hardest and a touch lighter in color, the pick for a budget or rough wear. 18K is 75 percent gold, deeper in color and softer; here 136 of the 159 are heavy Miami Cubans. Gold itself does not tarnish; the alloy in 10K and 14K can dull with chlorine or heavy sweat, and a wash brings it back.
Will my pendant fit the chain?
Yes, if the bail clears the link; our pendants have adjustable bails that fit even the heavy Cubans, so a pendant bought here fits any chain here. A heavy pendant wants a solid chain, and Franco, box, rope and wheat carry a pendant best. Call or open our live chat with the pendant in hand and a jeweler tells you the width, or bring it in. Bracelets in many of the same links are on the Men's Gold Bracelets page, to match link for link.
Can I trade in my old chain?
Yes, any time, toward the next one. The trade is on the gold in it, its grams and its karat, so the chain you bought years ago counts toward the one you want now. Bring it in, or call us first, 212-872-9692, and we tell you what to expect.
Can I get a better price?
Ask: a package deal or a better price is a phone call or a live chat away, 212-872-9692 or the chat on any listing. Our chains are not sold by the gram, but the heavier the chain, the better the price per gram you get, and the markup is fair and honest across the board. Pay over time is offered at the checkout too: Shop Pay installments, Affirm, Afterpay or Acima.
How fast does it ship, and can I return it?
An in-stock chain usually ships within two to five business days, and you have fourteen calendar days from confirmed delivery to return it new, unworn and unaltered. Five percent comes off as restocking; under the refund policy the desk clears a return first, the chain goes back on the store's insured label, never yours, its cost deducted from the refund. Custom pieces and a chain cut or extended to your length are final: settle the inches first. Phone the desk, 212-872-9692, or open the chat.
