The short answer
- Pure gold does not tarnish. 10K, 14K and 18K can darken. They are gold mixed with other metals, mostly copper, silver and zinc, and those metals react with sweat, cologne, chlorine and time.
- A dull film, a dark clasp, or a dark or green mark on your skin does not, by itself, mean fake. Real karat gold can do all of it.
- The one sign of plating is another metal showing through: grey, white or copper-red where the yellow rubs away.

A dull film over the whole piece
The one we see most at the counter, on every karat: film on the gold and in the joints, not tarnish. The wash, by chain style, is in how to clean a gold chain at home. Clean, dry and still dull means fine scratches: ask the desk about a polish.
A dark or black smudge on your skin
Usually metal, not dirt. Makeup, sunscreen and powder carry fine hard particles that wear tiny amounts of metal off the piece, and metal that fine looks black on skin.
A green mark on your skin
Green is copper. Yellow and rose gold carry copper in the alloy, and sweat, lotion and salt turn it into a green salt on the skin, more so with heat and a tight fit.
A dark clasp or dark joints
The clasp and the joints hold sweat and soap longest and dry last, so the alloy darkens there first.
Rose gold turning browner
Rose gold carries more copper than yellow gold, and copper deepens with air and sweat, so rose gold can drift toward brown.
White gold turning yellow
Most white gold is plated with rhodium, a white metal, over a gold alloy that is pale and warm on its own. As the plating wears at the rub points, the warm color shows. The gold is all still there; only the white finish thinned.
Darker after months in a drawer
Air carries traces of sulfur, and so do rubber bands and some papers and boxes. The silver and copper in the alloy react with it and form a thin dark layer, even on a piece nobody wore; put away damp, it goes sooner. Store it dry, one piece per sealed bag.

The one sign that points to plating
Solid karat gold is the same metal all the way through: it can darken, but it cannot wear through to another color. A gold-plated or gold-filled piece is a thin layer of gold over another metal.

In our experience a 10K chain dulls a little before a 14K, and an 18K holds its color longest. That is the alloy showing, never a sign the chain is under its karat.

Is tarnished gold worth anything?
Yes, the same as it was bright: the dark is on the surface and does not change the grams. The gold in it is worth its grams, times the karat's share of gold, at the day's gold price.
A 14K chain of 20 grams holds 20 times 0.583, about 11.7 grams of gold. From our gold trade-in page: "We test the karat and weigh it in grams while you watch, then quote you a number."

Questions
Does real gold tarnish?
Pure 24K gold does not. Real 10K, 14K and 18K gold can darken; that is real gold behaving the way it does, not a test of real. The stamp, the scale and a karat test answer that question; the dark does not.
Does a fake gold chain turn green?
Often, yes: a gold-plated chain over brass or copper turns skin green, more so once the plating wears. But a real 10K or 14K chain can leave green too, so green does not tell real from fake; the rub points do.
What does gold look like when it tarnishes?
Dull first, then a darker, brownish cast, darkest at the joints, the clasp and the back of the links. On 10K and rose gold it can run reddish, which is the copper in the alloy.
Does 14K gold ever tarnish?
It can darken, slowly: the 41.7 percent that is not gold, mostly copper and silver, reacts with sweat, sulfur and chlorine. Most of it washes off.
Does solid gold tarnish?
Solid means not hollow; it says nothing about purity. A solid 14K chain darkens the same way a hollow one does, because darkening is the alloy. A hollow chain can also darken from the inside if water sits in it.
Is it okay to shower with gold on?
Water does not hurt solid karat gold. Soap and shampoo film settling in the joints is what dulls it, so rinse and dry it after, or take it off. Keep a gold-plated piece dry; scrubbing wears the thin layer. The pool and the hot tub are different: chlorine goes after the alloy and the solder.
How long does it take for green skin from jewelry to go away?
Usually it comes off at the first wash with soap and water; a trace that stays tends to fade over the next few washes. If it keeps coming back, dry the skin and the piece before wearing and let lotion dry first. A mark that does not fade is a question for a doctor.
Will a 24K gold necklace cause my skin to turn green?
Very unlikely: 24K is nearly all gold, with almost no copper to react. It can still leave a dark smudge when makeup rubs metal off. A necklace sold as 24K that leaves green is worth a karat test.
