A chain that looks dull is almost never worn out. It is coated in skin oil, cologne and soap film. What changes is the method, because a solid Cuban and a hollow rope are two very different things.

Almost every "my gold looks faded" question we get at the counter is a cleaning question, not a quality question. Karat gold does not fade. It gets a film on it. The film comes off in about ten minutes of actual work at a kitchen sink, using four things you already own.

The catch is that the method is not universal. Four chain styles need the standard clean modified and two need longer than you would think. This guide covers how to clean a gold chain properly, then what changes by style, by metal, and what to never do.

Wearing it

Most chain damage happens on the body, not in the drawer. Five habits cover almost all of it, and they are in order of when they happen in your day.

  1. Last on, first off.Cologne, lotion and hairspray go on first. Let them dry, then put the chain on. Take it off before you undress so it does not catch on a collar.
  2. Skip the pool and the hot tub.Chlorine attacks the copper and nickel in karat gold and the solder at every joint, and it needs tension in the metal to do real damage, which every clasp and every link already has. 10K and 14K are the most exposed because they carry the most alloy. That is why chains snap at a link weeks after a vacation, long after the swim that caused it.
  3. Solid gold tolerates the shower. Plated does not.Solid 10K, 14K and 18K will survive it, but shampoo film settling into the link joints is the single most common cause of a dull chain. Plated and vermeil chains should stay dry, since soap works the plating loose at the edges.
  4. Take it off at the gym.Sweat is salt water, and it sits on the same list of corrosive agents as pool water, just weaker. It dries in the joints and stays there. A swinging chain also catches on equipment.
  5. Wipe it when you take it off.Ten seconds with a dry microfiber cloth. This one habit turns weekly cleaning into monthly cleaning.

Cleaning a gold chain at home

The best way to clean a gold chain at home uses four things you already own, and it is the same method a bench jeweler uses before a piece goes back to a customer.

What you need: warm water, three drops of plain dish soap, a soft bristle toothbrush, a microfiber cloth.

Step 1. Soak

Ten minutes in warm, not hot, soapy water. Rope and Byzantine chains take fifteen, because the weave holds more.

Step 2. Brush

Soft bristles only, and brush where link meets link. That joint is where the grime lives, not on the face of the link.

Step 3. Rinse

Warm running water, run through from both ends of the chain, so debris flushes out instead of packing in. Put a strainer in the sink first.

Step 4. Dry fully

Pat with microfiber, then air dry a full hour before it goes back in the box. Water left inside the links is what dulls a chain and darkens the inside of the joints.

That is the whole method for most chains. The exceptions are below, and there are more of them than people expect.

Two worth calling out

Rope chains look dead first

Dozens of small facets means dozens of places for film to sit, so a rope loses its flash before a Cuban of the same age. A fifteen minute soak brings back more shine than anything you can buy in a bottle.

Tennis chains dim from behind

The dirt sits under the stones, not on top of them. Light enters a stone through the top and returns through the bottom, so a film on the back of the setting kills the return. Brush behind the settings and the light comes through again.

If you do not know whether your chain is solid or hollow

Weigh it against its size. A hollow chain feels light for how big it looks, and it will usually sound slightly tinny when it drops on a hard surface. When in doubt, treat it as hollow: short soak, long dry. Every chain we make is stamped, and anything bought from us has its metal and construction on the invoice.

Storing it

Hang it or lay it flat, one chain per slot, in a soft lined box. Silver gets an anti tarnish strip. Going into storage for months means a sealed bag with the air pressed out, which slows tarnish better than anything you can buy. The exception is pearl and opal, which need some humidity and should not be sealed airtight.

Bring a chain to a jeweler when a stone moves under fingernail pressure, a link has stretched open, the clasp stops springing back, or a joint shows a dark hairline. All four are cheap to fix at that stage and expensive to fix once the chain has actually parted.

Questions

Does gold tarnish?

Pure gold does not. The copper and silver alloyed into 10K and 14K can, but it takes sulfur, chlorine or heavy sweat to get there, and most chains never do. What looks like tarnish is almost always skin oil film sitting in the joints, and soap and water take it off.

Can you shower with a gold chain?

Solid gold will survive it. It still costs you something, because shampoo and soap film settle into the link joints and dull the chain faster than anything else in daily life. Plated and vermeil chains should never see the shower, since soap works the plating loose at the edges. If you shower in it, wipe it dry after.

Can I use toothpaste to clean a gold chain?

No. It is an abrasive made for tooth enamel. On gold it leaves fine scratches that read as haze, and on plated pieces it removes the plating outright. Dish soap does the same job with none of the damage.

How do I untangle a chain?

Lay it flat on a hard surface, put a drop of baby oil or olive oil on the knot, and work it apart with two wooden toothpicks pushing outward from the center. Never pull the ends. Wash the chain afterward so no oil stays in the links. Skip the oil entirely on porous stones such as opal, turquoise and pearl.

How often should I clean my chain?

Wipe after every wear. Deep clean monthly for daily wear and quarterly for occasional wear. Stone set pieces get a prong check every six months.

Is an ultrasonic cleaner safe for gold chains?

Yes on solid gold with no stones and no plating. No on plated pieces, glue set stones, hollow chains and hollow bead chains. Even on solid gold, an ultrasonic can work a marginal prong loose, so check settings by hand before and after.

What is the best thing to clean a gold chain with?

Warm water and three drops of plain dish soap. Not jewelry dip, not toothpaste, not baking soda. The commercial cleaners that are safe are doing the same thing the soap is doing, at a higher price.
