The short answer
- To clean gold jewelry or a gold chain at home: warm water, three drops of plain dish soap, a soft toothbrush, ten minutes, then an hour to dry. That is our method for solid 10K, 14K and 18K.
- The chain changes the soak: longer for a rope, short with a long dry for a hollow chain, a prong check first for a tennis chain, a damp cloth only for gold-plated.
- Dark is not, by itself, a sign of a fake. Karat gold does not fade; it gets a film. On 10K, in our experience, the dark is the alloy showing.
- Solid gold can take a shower; plated cannot. Wipe it dry after. No toothpaste, baking soda, vinegar or bleach, and no pool.

How to clean a gold chain at home
What you need: warm water, three drops of plain dish soap (no lotion in it, no bleach), a soft bristle toothbrush, a microfiber cloth. That is the whole kit. It takes off film, not gold.
- Soak. Ten minutes in warm, not hot, soapy water: water your hand is happy in. Rope and Byzantine take fifteen, because the weave holds more; a tennis or hollow chain five.
- Brush. Soft bristles only, and brush where link meets link. That joint is where the grime lives, not on the face of the link.
- Rinse. Warm running water, run through from both ends of the chain, so the debris flushes out instead of packing in. Put a strainer in the sink first.
- Dry fully. Pat it with the microfiber, then let it air dry a full hour before it goes back in the box. Water left inside the links is what dulls a chain and darkens the inside of the joints.

Cleaning a 10K gold chain
Say you bought a 10K chain in the spring, wore it through the summer, and it came out dull and dark at the joints. The first question we get at the counter is whether it is real.
Most of the time we are looking at a real 10K chain with a summer of sweat and cologne on it. The alloy has darkened. The gold underneath has not changed.
Three checks you can do tonight, before the wash.
- The mark. 417 on a 10K chain (the table below has 14K and 18K), usually by the clasp, on a tag or on a link end. It means the piece is that fineness within the legal tolerance. No mark, or one you cannot read: bring it in.
- The wear points. Look at the back of the clasp and the links that rub. Yellow worn through to a grey or white metal means plated, not karat gold.
- A magnet. Karat gold does not pull. A pull along the links means another metal under the yellow; a pull only at the clasp can be its steel spring; no pull proves nothing by itself.
Green skin under a 10K chain is, in our experience, the copper in the alloy reacting with sweat or lotion, not a sign of a fake. Soap and water take the mark off you, and the chain cleans the same way.
The method does not change. What changes is how much of the chain is not gold: the alloy, copper and silver in a yellow chain. The trade's rule of thumb: 10K is the hardest of the three and the first to darken, 18K the softest.

Does 10K gold tarnish quickly?
Not the gold. 10K is 41.7 percent gold; more than half of the metal is alloy, and the alloy can darken under sweat, cologne and chlorine.
In our experience a 10K chain dulls a little sooner than 14K, and most of what people call tarnish is film that soap takes off. A darkened 10K chain is not, by itself, a sign of a fake; a jeweler tells film from plating.
What does tarnished 10K gold look like?
At the counter we see dull first, then darker at the joints and on the back of the links. On 10K the dark can carry a brown or reddish cast, which is the copper in the alloy, not the gold.
A grey film that comes off with soap and water is not tarnish. Yellow rubbed through to a grey or white base metal is plating, not karat gold.
Can I shower with my 10K gold chain?
A solid 10K chain survives the shower. What it does not survive well is the soap and shampoo film that settles in the joints and dulls it, so wipe it dry after.
Chlorine in a pool or hot tub is a different matter; it attacks the alloy and the solder at the joints. A gold-plated chain stays out of the water.

Solid or hollow, and how to tell at home
We stock hollow rope, Franco and Cuban beside the solid ones. A hollow chain feels light for how big it looks, and when it drops on the bench it sounds slightly tinny to our ear. Our gold chains are solid unless the listing says hollow or lightweight. A few say semi-solid, which is a hollow-core link.
The surer check is a scale. On our solid Miami Cuban makes, a 14K at 8 mm runs about 5.4 grams an inch and a 10K about 4.7, counted September 25, 2026. A chain of that look weighing well under that is not a solid Cuban of that width.

What never to use on a gold chain
Eight things we would not do to a gold chain, and why.
- Toothpaste, baking soda paste, a salt scrub. Abrasives. On gold they leave fine scratches that read as haze; on a plated piece they take the plating off.
- Bleach, vinegar, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide. Bleach and pool chlorine are the same family; all of them go after the alloy and the solder at every joint, not the dirt.
- The pool and the hot tub. Chlorine, warm water and a clasp under tension. The damage shows late: at the counter we see the link part weeks after the swim.
- Jewelry dip. A chemical made for tarnish, and what is on a gold chain is film; the mild soap takes film off.
- The foil-and-soda trick. Made for silver tarnish; from what we see at the counter, on karat gold it does nothing useful.
- Paper towels. Wood fiber. They can leave fine lines on a polished face. Use the microfiber.
- An ultrasonic on a plated, glue-set or hollow piece. Fine on solid gold with no stones. On the others it lifts plating, drops stones and drives water into the seam.
- Boiling water and hours-long soaks. Not for a hollow or a stone-set piece.

Wearing it
Most of the chain damage we see happens on the body, not in the drawer. Three habits cover most of it, in the order of your day.
- Last on, first off. Cologne, lotion and hairspray go on first. Let them dry, then the chain: spray sits in the joints and starts the film. Off before you undress so it does not catch on a collar.
- Take it off at the gym. Sweat is salt water, weaker than the pool, and it dries in the joints. A swinging chain catches on equipment. The same questions for a bracelet are in the men's bracelet guide.
- Wipe it when you take it off. Ten seconds with a dry microfiber cloth. At the counter we see this one habit turn a weekly clean into a monthly one.
Storing it
Hang it or lay it flat, one chain per slot, in a soft lined box; chains thrown in together knot. Silver gets an anti-tarnish strip. Going into storage for months means a sealed bag with the air pressed out. The exception is pearl and opal, which need some humidity and should not be sealed airtight.
Bring a chain to a jeweler when a stone moves under fingernail pressure, a link has stretched open, the clasp stops springing back, or a joint shows a dark hairline. How do you make gold shiny again?
Take the film off first: the ten-minute soak and the soft brush at the joints. Karat gold does not fade; what dulls it is skin oil, cologne and soap film sitting in the joints.

How often should I clean my chain?
What we tell buyers: wipe after every wear. Deep clean monthly for a chain worn every day, quarterly for one worn now and then. Stone-set pieces get a prong check every six months. The wipe sets the pace, because film that never builds never needs a soak.
