10K gold: is 10k gold real gold, and what 10 karat means

Yes, 10K is real gold. Karats count gold in 24ths, and 10K is ten of them, or 41.7 percent. The rest is alloy, mostly copper and silver, and that alloy is what makes it hard. In the US, 10K is the lowest karat that may be sold as gold. A real piece is usually stamped 10K or 417, often on the clasp or inside the band. Nearly every title here says 10K, and none says plated or filled.

10K vs 14K: 10k vs 14k gold for men, which is better

Take 10K for hard wear and 14K for color. 14K is 58.3 percent gold, so its yellow runs warmer, and it scratches a little sooner. 10K keeps a thin link or a small prong tight, which suits a chain you sleep in or a ring on a working hand. The same design weighs about an eighth more in 14K, since gold outweighs the copper and silver it replaces. 18K is three quarters gold, deeper in color and softer again.
