How to buy 18K gold jewelry for men

When 18K suits a man best, and how to be sure the piece you want is solid

Pick 18K for color. It is three quarters pure gold, so its yellow runs deeper than 14K, but the metal is softer and shows marks sooner. Wear it on a chain or a pendant, and choose 14K for a ring that takes knocks every day. Every title here that names a build says solid, and the grams on a listing tell you how heavy it will sit.

18K gold: how pure 18k gold is, and what the 750 stamp means

18K is 18 parts pure gold in 24, three quarters of the metal. Its stamp, 750, counts the same gold in thousandths and usually sits inside a band or by a clasp. Ask the desk to check it on the piece you want. In yellow 18K the rest is mostly silver and copper, for strength and shade. The titles name 18K on all but a handful of pieces, and none says plated. Most pieces come in yellow, and nearly every pendant and ring is also offered in white or rose.

18K vs 14K: is 18k gold better than 14k for men, and the other karats

For color, 18K wins, and for hard wear, 14K does. At 58.3 percent gold, 14K is paler and harder, so a knock that marks 18K often leaves 14K clean. 10K is paler and tougher still. Gold is far denser than the silver and copper beside it, so more karat means more weight. Match two solid Miami Cubans by width, and the 18K one weighs about a sixth more than the 14K one on men's 14K gold. Against men's 10K gold, the gap grows to about a third.

What to buy: pendants, chains and diamond earrings in 18k gold for men

Put 18K where its color shows and knocks are few, on the chest or the ear more than the hand. Diamond earrings sold most in the year, and most of them also hang in our women's case. Pendants came second, mostly crosses and Stars of David. The chain case runs heavy, and most of it is solid Miami Cubans 10 mm and wider, made to be seen from across a room. For an everyday chain, start lighter, near 7 mm, the narrowest Cuban in the case.

Solid or hollow: is an 18k gold chain solid, and how to spot hollow

Read the build in the title. All but six chain titles here name it, each of those says solid, and no title says hollow. Hollow gold is a thin shell around air, light in the hand for its width, and a knock leaves a dent. Take a solid 10 mm Cuban here. It runs just under 10 grams an inch, as the table shows. Is 18K gold real gold?

Yes. Three parts in four of an 18K piece are pure gold, and the rest, mostly silver and copper, hardens it for wear. It is often stamped 18K or 750, and no title here calls a piece plated.

Which is better for a man, 18K or 14K gold?

18K for a chain or a pendant, 14K for a ring you wear hard. The harder 14K keeps its shape and polish through daily knocks. 18K gives the deeper yellow and more gold, and it asks for a little more care.

How do I know an 18K chain is solid?

The title says so. Every chain title here that names a build says solid, and none says hollow. A hollow chain weighs little and dents under a hard knock. Six chain titles name no build, so ask us about those.

Does 18K gold scratch easily?

Sooner than 14K, yes. Fine marks gather on a ring face or a clasp, and a thin piece can bend. Leave it home when you lift weights or work with tools, and a jeweler's polish lifts the marks.

Will 18K gold tarnish or turn my skin green?

Almost never. At three quarters gold, 18K keeps its color far better than the lower karats and seldom marks the skin. Chlorine and hard sweat can dull the surface, and gentle soap and water bring the shine back.

Why does an 18K chain weigh more than a 14K one?

More of it is gold, the densest metal in the mix. Put a solid 18K Miami Cuban beside ours in 14K at the same width, and the 18K weighs about a sixth more. So weigh like against like.
