How to choose an oval engagement ring
Choose the setting and the carat first, then the stone and her size
Choose the setting first. An oval already looks bigger than a round of the same weight, and a plain solitaire lets that length show. Then start at three carats, the middle of the rings here, where most buyers landed or went bigger. Every oval we sold in the year had a lab-grown center, mostly in yellow gold. Measure her finger before you order.

Find your ring size in a minute
Your screen becomes the sizer. Set it with a bank card, then measure the finger you will wear the ring on, with a ring that already fits that finger or with a strip of paper.
1. Set the screen with a card
Lay any bank, debit or ID card flat on the screen, standing tall, so its short edge runs across the box, and move the slider until the box is exactly as wide as the card. No bank card? A driver's license, metro card, gift card or hotel key is the same size. Without any card the circle and the ruler are not to scale: measure your paper strip with a real ruler and set that number in millimeters on the strip slider, then send it to the desk.
2. Measure
Take a ring that fits the same finger of the same hand the new ring will live on; every finger is its own size. Set it on the screen over the circle and move the slider until the circle just fills the inside of the ring.
Size 7, 17.3 mm inside
Wrap a strip of paper snug around the base of the finger, where the ring sits, and mark where it meets. If your knuckle is bigger, wrap it there too and take a size between the two, nearer the knuckle. Lay the strip along the ruler's right edge from the 0. Move the slider until the gold line sits on your mark.

Size 7: 17.3 mm across, 54.4 mm around. It is the most bought size here: 9 of the 52 oval engagement rings sold here in the past year with a size recorded. 18 of the 19 rings here list size 7.
Between two sizes? Take the one that passes the knuckle and sits snug below it. A wide band, 8 mm and up, fits tighter, so go up a half size. Measure at the end of the day, at room temperature.

Solitaire, hidden halo or halo for an oval engagement ring?
Choose the solitaire to show off the oval's length, and it is the ring bought most here. A hidden halo adds sparkle from the side and still looks like a solitaire from above. A halo makes the whole head look wider.
What carat oval engagement ring should I get?
Start at three carats, the middle of the centers here. That size and up was about six in ten of the oval rings sold. For something smaller, the hidden halo also comes with a 1.50 carat center.
Are the oval engagement rings here lab-grown or natural?
Mostly lab-grown, and every oval ring sold here in the year had a lab-grown center. Three are natural, the Signature and two fancy colors, a pink and a yellow. Whether a design can take the other kind of stone is a question for the desk.

Why does an oval diamond look bigger than a round, and what is the bow tie?
Its weight spreads along a longer and shallower outline, so more of the stone shows from the top. The bow tie is a dark band across its middle. Faint and shifting is fine, but a fixed black bar means a weak cut.
Yellow, white, rose gold or platinum for an oval ring?
Yellow gold, if you go by what people bought. About six in ten oval rings sold here were yellow and one was rose. 18K outsold 14K, mostly on the solitaire. Two rings carry platinum, the heavier metal.
How do I get her ring size without asking her?
When she takes her rings off, borrow the one from that finger and check it against the sizer on this page, or ask someone who knows. Size 7 sold most. If it needs a change after the proposal, ask the desk; a resized ring is final.
How long does an oval engagement ring take, and can I return it?
