Buyer's guide
Choosing a solitaire engagement ring or a diamond solitaire ring
One stone does the work, so choose it first, then its shape, its setting and the size
A solitaire is one stone on a plain band, so choosing the stone is choosing the ring. Every white diamond engagement solitaire here is lab-grown, from 2 to 4 carats. Most of those sold in the year carried three carats or more. Pick the shape next, then read the grades each listing prints. For a gem instead of a diamond, the gemstone solitaires set one round stone in yellow, white or rose gold.

Questions we get at the counter
What is a solitaire engagement ring?
It is one center stone on a band, with no halo and no side stones around it. Most rings here carry a lab-grown white diamond or one round gemstone, and two men's Timepiece rings gather small stones to read as one.
How many carats should a solitaire diamond ring be?
Three carats if the diamond should show from across a room, and most of the engagement solitaires bought were that big or bigger. The centers run 2 to 4 carats. Two carats still looks full on a slim band.
Are these solitaire diamonds lab-grown or natural?
Lab-grown, on every white diamond engagement solitaire here. A grown stone is carbon crystal like a mined one, with the same grades. The platinum solitaire and most men's rings read natural on the origin line, the two signets lab-grown, and the black diamond's says natural.
More questions we get
Which diamond shape looks biggest in a solitaire?
An oval, a marquise or an elongated cushion. The weight spreads into length, so the top of the stone looks larger than a round of the same carat. The oval is the one bought most, more than half of the diamond engagement solitaires.
Prongs, claws or a bezel for a solitaire ring?
Prongs, for the most light, and nearly every center sits on them. The emerald cuts sit in claws. A bezel circles the stone with a rim of gold and suits hands that take knocks, as on the men's signets.
Do you have gemstone solitaire rings?
Yes, sixteen of them, in 14K yellow, white or rose gold. Each holds one round gem of about a carat, all in color but the white topaz. Amethyst and topaz were bought most. Tanzanite and peridot are the softest, so save those for gentler wear.
How do I find her ring size for a solitaire?
Slip one of her rings off that finger for an evening and read it against the size guide on our engagement rings page. The women's rings all run every half size from 5 through 8. A resized ring is final, so check twice.
Can I return a solitaire ring?
Yes, for fourteen calendar days after it arrives, unworn and unaltered. Phone the desk or text 212-872-9692, or try the live chat, for our insured label. Five percent goes to restocking, the return shipping comes off, and resized or made-to-order rings stay final.
