Emerald Cut Engagement Rings

22 pieces

“Start with a beautiful ring on a great band, and think about the wedding bands that go with it.” Trax, at the jewelry store on 47th Street

18 rings, each an emerald cut diamond, not a green stone. Most buyers took a lab-grown 2 to 3 carat center.

The Clara five-stone sold most, 13 in the year, just ahead of the Lumiere solitaire on a pave band.

Buyer's guide

How to choose an emerald cut engagement ring

Learn the cut, then pick the setting, the carat and grades, the stone and her size

Every ring here holds an emerald cut diamond, a long rectangle with flat, stepped facets, not the green emerald stone. That open face lets you see into a diamond, so buy clarity before carat. Start near two to three carats, the weight most buyers chose. Every ring bought had a lab-grown center, nearly all in 14K gold. Pick the setting she will wear every day, and read her size from a ring she owns.

Find your ring size in a minute

Your screen becomes the sizer. Set it with a bank card, then measure the finger you will wear the ring on, with a ring that already fits that finger or with a strip of paper.

1. Set the screen with a card

Lay any bank, debit or ID card flat on the screen, standing tall, so its short edge runs across the box, and move the slider until the box is exactly as wide as the card. No bank card? A driver's license, metro card, gift card or hotel key is the same size. Without any card the circle and the ruler are not to scale: measure your paper strip with a real ruler and set that number in millimeters on the strip slider, then send it to the desk.

2. Measure

Take a ring that fits the same finger of the same hand the new ring will live on; every finger is its own size. Set it on the screen over the circle and move the slider until the circle just fills the inside of the ring.

Size 5, 15.7 mm inside

Size 5: 15.7 mm across, 49.3 mm around. 15 of the 18 rings here list size 5.

Between two sizes? Take the one that passes the knuckle and sits snug below it. A wide band, 8 mm and up, fits tighter, so go up a half size. Measure at the end of the day, at room temperature.

The emerald cut: what an emerald cut diamond is, and why it is not a green stone

Emerald cut names a shape, not the green stone. It is a diamond cut as a rectangle with trimmed corners, its facets laid in long flat steps. The steps give wide flashes of light instead of sparkle, and the open top lets you look into the stone. A classic one runs about one and a half times as long as it is wide. It faces up about as big as a round of the same weight and makes her finger look longer.

The settings: emerald cut solitaire, side stone and toi et moi rings

Decide how much the stone should stand alone. The two rings bought most sit at either end: the Clara lines its center up with emerald and baguette side stones, five in a row, and the Lumiere holds one stone on claws over a thin pave band. Two plain solitaires on claws keep the step cut clean, and two Toi et Moi rings pair an emerald cut with a pear. Look for metal over all four corners, where a step cut chips first.

Carat and clarity: what carat emerald cut diamond, and the grades that show

Start between two and three carats, where most buyers landed; the table shows which rings hold each weight. On our diamond size chart, two carats is about 9 by 6 mm and three about 10 by 7. The open steps hide little, so stay at VS clarity or better and keep the color high. Every center that states a grade reads D to F and VS or better.

Stone and metal: lab-grown or natural, in 14K, 18K or platinum

Take lab-grown in 14K unless she wants a mined stone. Every ring sold in the year had a grown center, and all but one were 14K. The one natural center here sits in an 18K ring, and two rings are platinum. Nearly every ring comes in yellow and white gold, most in rose too. White gold or platinum keeps a colorless stone looking white.

Her size and returns: emerald cut ring sizes, resizing and returns

Order the size she wears. Check a ring from her ring finger against the sizer on this page or our ring size chart. Most rings here run in half sizes 5 to 8, many to 9, and three come in a single size. A ring from the case returns unworn within fourteen days; a made-to-order size, a resized ring or custom work is final. Not sure which yours is? Start on the live chat, or call or text 212-872-9692 from 10 AM ET.

Questions we get in the store

Is an emerald cut engagement ring an emerald stone?

No, every ring here holds a diamond. Emerald cut names the shape, a long rectangle with trimmed corners and flat stepped facets, borrowed from green emeralds. For the green stone itself, see our women's gemstone rings.

What carat emerald cut diamond should I buy?

Two to three carats, the center most buyers chose. An emerald cut of two carats is about 9 by 6 mm face up. The biggest centers here reach five carats, for a ring that reads across a room.

What clarity and color does an emerald cut need?

Buy VS clarity or better, because the open steps show the inside of the stone more than a round does. A tint shows more too. Every center that states a grade is D to F color and VS or better, several of them VVS.

More questions we get

Lab-grown or natural emerald cut diamond?

Lab-grown, going by what people bought, since every ring sold in the year had a grown center. Both are real diamond, graded on the same letters. One ring holds a natural center, set in 18K gold.

Which setting suits an emerald cut diamond?

Pick a solitaire to show the step cut alone, or side stones to make the ring read wider. The Clara, with its side stones, and the Lumiere, one stone on a pave band, were bought most. Check that all four corners are covered.

Can I see an emerald cut ring in person before I buy?

Yes. Come to our showroom at 64 W 47th Street, open seven days. Tell the live chat which ring you want to see, or call or text 212-872-9692 from 10 AM ET, and we will say whether it is in our store or made to order.

How do I get her ring size if the proposal is a surprise?

Borrow a ring from her ring finger and check it on the sizer on this page, or ask a friend who knows. If it is off after she says yes, ask the desk whether it can be resized; a resized ring is final.

Can I return an emerald cut engagement ring?

Yes, an unworn, unaltered ring from the case, within fourteen days of delivery. Start the return on the live chat; it goes back on our insured label, and the refund keeps back that label and five percent restocking. Made-to-order sizes, resized rings and custom work are final.

About this collection
ABOUT THIS COLLECTION

Emerald Cut Engagement Rings: the Step-Cut Diamond, Mostly Lab-Grown

An emerald cut diamond is a long rectangle with cut corners and flat, stepped facets, like stairs, and it is not the green emerald stone. It flashes in broad planes rather than sparkling and shows more of the inside of the diamond, so buy the clarity a grade higher than you would for a round. Nearly all the emerald cut engagement rings here hold a lab-grown diamond, most of them 2 to 5 carats. Most are 14K gold, with some in 18K and a few in platinum, set as solitaires, east-west and bezel settings, eternity-set rings and toi et moi rings that pair an emerald cut with a pear.

Want an emerald cut of another size or setting? Start a custom engagement ring on the ring builder, and we will be in touch about it.

For the same outline with more sparkle, see radiant cut engagement rings; for the green gemstone, see emerald rings. Go by size with 2 carat engagement rings and 3 carat engagement rings, see every lab-grown center at lab-grown diamond engagement rings, or every shape at engagement rings for women. The 4 C's of diamonds explains the clarity grades.

Emerald cut engagement rings at a glance

  • Centers: emerald cut diamonds, most of them 2 to 5 carats.
  • Diamonds: nearly all lab-grown.
  • Grades, where the listing gives them: nearly all E or F color and VS or VVS clarity.
  • Setting: prongs hold most centers, a few of them claw prongs.
  • Metal: most 14K gold, some 18K, a few platinum; most offered in yellow, white or rose.
  • Sizes: nearly all in half sizes, most from 5 to 8.
  • Made to order: nearly all are made in her size after you order, and the desk gives the timing.

Questions about emerald cut engagement rings

Emerald cut or radiant cut? Both are rectangles with cut corners. The emerald cut has long step facets that flash in broad planes and show the inside of the stone; the radiant has brilliant facets, sparkles close to a round and hides inclusions better.

What is the difference between an emerald cut and an Asscher? An Asscher is a square emerald cut: the same cut corners and step facets in a square outline.

How big does an emerald cut look? About 7 by 5 mm at 1 carat, 9 by 6 mm at 2 carats and 10 by 7 mm at 3 carats, face up. Our diamond size chart shows the rest.

Where can I see emerald cut engagement rings near me? In New York, at our showroom on 47th Street in the Diamond District, where every stone is shown in person or on video before you decide.
