The short answer
- 10K, 14K and 18K differ in how much of the metal is gold. 10K is 41.7 percent gold, stamped 417; 14K is 58.3 percent, stamped 585; 18K is 75 percent, stamped 750.
- Which to buy: 14K for a chain worn every day, 10K for width and rough wear, 18K for color. 14K holds a pendant, and it is the karat we sell most.
- A higher karat also weighs more. At the same link and width, our solid 14K Miami Cubans run 7 to 15 percent heavier per inch than the 10K, because the metal is denser.
- Solid or hollow matters more than the stamp. Ask it first, in any karat.

Color and hardness in that table are the trade's general experience, not a test we ran. The chains: men's gold chains, and by karat, 10K, 14K and 18K.
What the karat number actually means
Say the same 4 mm Cuban sits in your cart twice, once in 10K and once in 14K: same link, same width, same length. The only difference is the number, and the number is a share.
Pure gold is soft; a chain made of nothing but gold would not hold its shape. So it is mixed with other metal, copper, silver and zinc mostly, and the karat is the share of gold in 24 parts: 10K is 10 parts gold, 14K is 14, 18K is 18.
On a chain the stamp usually sits on a small tag by the clasp, sometimes on a link end. If you cannot find one, ask.

Density: the part most karat comparisons miss
Higher karat gold is denser. Same chain in all three karats: the 18K does not just carry more gold in every gram. It weighs more grams.
Why does 14K weigh more per inch than 10K at the same width?
Two links of one style and width hold the same room for metal; the denser metal fills it with more grams.

We do not have to take the book's word for it. Our listings print the chain's grams, so we counted our own solid Miami Cubans, 10K against 14K, where the listings hold both.

The gap in the last column is the density of the alloy, not the size of the link.
By the book the gap at the same volume is about 13 to 18 percent: the 8 mm pair matches it, and the 6 and 7 mm pairs run under it, in our reading because the clasp counts for more of a lighter chain's grams, and stated widths are rounded.
At 8 mm and 22 inches that is about 103 grams in 10K against about 118 in 14K, computed from our makes' grams per inch. Below 3 mm we do not print the pair: in our reading, at the thin end the clasp and the width rounding outweigh the alloy.
Is 18K heavier than 14K? Yes, at the same link and width
By the book, about 17 percent heavier than 14K at the same size. We have not yet counted enough solid 18K of one width to print its grams per inch, so that step stays by the book for now.
Gram for gram, 14K holds about 40 percent more gold than 10K; 18K about 29 percent more than 14K, and nearly twice the 10K.
Grams and purity together, our 14K solid Cuban carries about half again more gold per inch than the 10K at the same width. The metal part of the price follows that gap, so, leaving the making aside, expect the 14K to sit about that far above the 10K.

For the 4 mm Cuban in your cart, the 4 mm bar works out to about 27.5 grams at 22 inches.
Our 10K solid Miami Cubans just under that width are listed at 3.5 mm, at 0.86 grams per inch against the 14K's 1.25 at 4 mm: not the same chain in two karats. In our reading most of that gap is the half millimeter of width, not the karat.
To check a listing, divide its grams by its length and read it against the ladder. If a 10K comes in far lighter than the 14K at the same width, it is hollow or a different link; text 212-872-9692 with the listing link before you pay.

10K gold: more width for the money
The real argument for 10K is width: for the same money, a wider chain, and on a big link width is what people see from across a room.
If you work with your hands, or you have broken a chain before, it is a fair place to start. Our 10K chains are at men's 10K gold.
14K gold: the everyday chain
This is what we stock most and sell most: more than half of the chains we sold in the last twelve months were 14K; 10K and silver split most of the rest, about one in five each; 18K is a few in a hundred, read September 25, 2026.
The color is what people picture when they picture a gold chain: warm, and it does not go orange. The price sits in the middle, which is the plain reason it became the American standard for a chain.
If you are buying one chain and it has to do everything, wear it daily, hold a pendant, survive a gym bag, this is the answer more often than not. Our 14K is at men's 14K gold and 14K gold chains.
18K gold: bought for the color
On a polished Cuban link 18K reads warmer than 14K. It is the softest of the three, which does not mean fragile: in the trade's experience it picks up fine scratches sooner, and a thin 18K link bends before a thin 10K one.
People who buy 18K usually know why: it is for the piece worn a few times a week rather than around the clock, or for something built to keep. Color is the point, and the color is what you are paying for.
Polishing removes a little metal each time, and in our experience a thin wall of soft high-karat gold is a bad idea. Our 18K chains are solid unless the listing says hollow or lightweight; we list none titled hollow in 18K. Our 18K is at men's 18K gold.
Which karat should you buy?
Tell us what the chain is for and the answer is usually quick; if you are not sure, 14K is the safe answer for a reason.

White gold changes the answer
White gold is not white. On most white gold chains, in our experience, the alloy underneath is a pale grayish yellow and what you see is rhodium plating over it.
The piece is still 14K or 18K gold; the rhodium is a finish, and a finish wears, faster on some skin and with harder wear.
The part that flips the logic: in our experience, 18K white gold is harder to keep white than 14K white gold. There is more yellow gold in the alloy underneath, so as the rhodium thins, more warmth shows through.

What actually breaks on a gold chain
Links almost never fail. The two things that go are clasps and solder joints, and at the counter we see that in every karat. Neither has much to do with purity; both have everything to do with how the chain was put together.
Construction beats karat. In our experience a solid 10K chain outlasts a hollow 18K chain, and a crushed hollow link often cannot be restored the way a solid one can.
Solid means the links are not hollow. Semi-solid is a trade word for a hollow-core link. Before you compare two chains by karat, ask whether either is hollow; that one question tells you more than the stamp does.

Why online answers contradict each other
Because the answer depends on where the page was written.

This is the trade as we have seen it, not a survey.
So a European guide saying 18K is the floor and an American guide saying 14K is the middle are both being straight with you; they describe different markets.
Buying in the US, 14K is the center of gravity: what shops stock, what pendants are made to match, what repair work is set up for.
21K, 22K and 24K
21K and 22K are softer still, the coin and Middle-East trade's karats. An inherited chain stamped 875 is 21K.
We do not stock 21K chains today. The 22K we carry is by the piece, and 18K is the top karat we stock in any depth.

A note on skin sensitivity
Reactions come from the alloy, not the gold. Nickel is the usual cause, and it is a different thing from the copper reaction that leaves a green mark.
Alloy recipes differ between makers, so no karat is automatically safe or automatically a problem. Higher karat gold holds less alloy, so there is less of whatever bothers you, but that is a tendency and not a promise. A persistent or severe reaction is a question for a doctor, not a jeweler.

A karat mark means the piece is that fineness within the legal tolerance, and federal law sets that tolerance. It is why two honestly marked chains of the same karat can test a hair differently.

Is it better to invest in 10K or 14K gold?
A chain is jewelry, not a bar. What you hold is the karat's share of gold, and gram for gram 14K holds about 40 percent more gold than 10K. Part of any chain's price is the making. The gold price moves daily; today's number is on the spot page.
Can you visually tell the difference between 10K and 14K gold?
Side by side under one light, yes: in our experience 10K runs paler and cooler, 14K warmer. Alone on a neck, most people read either as gold, and the gap is smaller than buyers expect. The sure read is the stamp, 417 for 10K and 585 for 14K.
How can you tell if gold is 10K or 14K?
Read the stamp: 417 is 10K, 585 is 14K, usually on a small tag by the clasp or on a link end. Then the scale: a scale at home checks a chain against the grams on its listing. Color alone is not a test. Or bring it to the counter, where it is karat tested and weighed.
What are the cons of 10K gold?
Color, reaction and grams. 10K is the palest of the three and carries the most alloy, so on some skin it marks or dulls sooner; a wipe after wear usually keeps it right. At the same link and width it also weighs less: our solid 14K Miami Cubans run 7 to 15 percent heavier per inch than the 10K.
Can I wear a 14K chain with an 18K pendant?
Yes, and at the counter we see it all the time. Under one light the 18K reads a shade deeper; alone on a neck, in our experience, most people do not notice. If you want an exact match, buy the two together and compare them in person. Photographs are unreliable for gold color.
Why did my gold chain turn my skin green?
Copper in the alloy reacting with sweat or lotion. Lower karats carry more alloy, so in our experience it shows up more with 10K than with 18K. It does not mean the chain is fake. Wipe it after wear: how to clean a gold chain has the steps, and does gold tarnish, or is it fake explains each mark.
Does a real gold chain stick to a magnet?
No, but that does not prove much. Brass and copper are not magnetic either. A pull means steel, and the clasp spring alone can pull on a real chain. The magnet rules out a steel chain and nothing else; the stamp and the scale do the rest.
