10K is 41.7% pure gold, 14K is 58.3%, 18K is 75%. What that changes about color, hardness, weight, and what you actually pay for a chain.
The question comes up at the counter maybe twenty times a week, always in the same shape. Somebody has already picked the style. They know they want a Cuban, they know roughly how wide, they have a length in mind. Then they hit three numbers and they want to know which one is right.
Short answer: 14K, for most people. Longer answer below, including when it isn't.
What the karat number actually means
Gold on its own is soft enough to mark with a fingernail. Nobody makes a chain out of it, because the links would deform in a pocket. So it gets mixed with copper, silver, zinc ,and more and the karat number is the ratio.
10K is about 41.7% gold. 14K is about 58.3%. 18K is 75%. The rest is alloy, and the alloy is what makes the chain a chain. More alloy, harder metal. Less alloy, richer color. Every difference between the three comes out of that one tradeoff.

On a chain the stamp usually sits on a small tag next to the clasp, not on the links. If you cannot find one anywhere, ask about it.
The part most karat comparisons miss
Here is what almost nobody explains, and it matters more than the color difference.
Higher karat gold is denser. Take the identical chain, same style, same width, same length, and make it in all three. The 18K version does not just cost more per gram. It weighs more grams.

Same chain, three karats. The difference is density, and it varies a little with the alloy recipe.
So stepping up a karat costs you twice: more gold in each gram, and more grams. That compounding is the piece buyers rarely see spelled out, and it changes the arithmetic a lot.

The purity column is the number people quote. The right-hand column is what you are actually buying, because the denser metal fills the same volume with more grams. That is why the jump from 14K to 18K feels steeper than it looks on paper. It is not markup. It is density.
Gold density is a range, not a fixed constant. The metals mixed with the gold differ between manufacturers, and more copper pushes density up while more silver pulls it down. The figures here use the standard jeweller's specific gravity values for yellow gold, 11.57, 13.07 and 15.58 g/cm³, anchored to the measured weight of a 10K chain we stock. Published ranges for 14K yellow run roughly 13.0 to 14.0, so treat the gram figures as close rather than exact. Any specific chain should be weighed rather than assumed.

Color and hardness pull in opposite directions. That is the whole comparison.
The palest of the three. Next to an 18K chain the difference is obvious. On its own, on a neck, most people just read it as gold.
It is also the hardest, because it carries the most alloy. If somebody is rough on jewelry, works with their hands, or has already broken a chain, this is a reasonable place to start.
The real argument for 10K is width. Same money, wider chain. On a big link style, width is what people notice from across a room. Nobody has ever walked past a 12mm Cuban and wondered about its purity.
Where it gives ground: the color runs cooler, and the higher alloy content makes it more reactive over time. Wipe it down after wear and it stays right.

This is the one that walks out most often, and it is not close.
The color is what people picture when they picture a gold chain. Warm, but it does not go orange. Hard enough to take daily contact without babying it. The price sits in the middle, which is the honest reason it became the American standard for fine jewelry.
If you are buying one chain and it has to do everything, wear it daily, hold a pendant, survive a gym bag, this is the answer more often than not.

The richest yellow of the three, and there is no faking it. On a polished Cuban link it reads deep and warm in a way 14K does not quite reach.
It is also the softest. That does not mean fragile. It means it picks up fine surface scratches sooner, and a thin 18K chain bends before a thin 10K one does.
People who buy 18K usually know why they want it. It is for the piece worn a few times a week rather than around the clock, or for somebody building something to keep. Color is the point, and the color is what you are paying for.
One practical note: polishing removes a small amount of metal each time. On a chain polished every few months, that adds up over years. Be deliberate about it.

White gold changes the answer
Here is the thing most buyers find out too late.
White gold is not white. The alloy underneath is a pale grayish yellow. What you are looking at is rhodium plating, and plating wears. It needs redoing periodically, and how often depends on skin chemistry and how hard the piece gets worn.
18K white gold is harder to keep white than 14K white gold. There is more yellow gold in the alloy underneath, so as the rhodium thins, more warmth shows through. If you want white, the higher karat is working against you.
That is the opposite of how karat behaves everywhere else in this guide, and it is worth knowing before you spend the extra.

What actually breaks on a gold chain
Links almost never fail. The two things that go are clasps and solder joints, and that holds across all three karats.
A clasp is a moving part with a spring in it, and moving parts wear out. Solder joints sit wherever the chain was assembled, and lower karat solder is harder, which is a small point in 10K's favor and a small point against 18K on a chain that gets caught and yanked.
Neither has much to do with purity. Both have everything to do with how the chain was put together.
Construction beats karat, every time.
A solid 10K chain outlasts a hollow 18K chain and it is not a close contest. A crushed hollow link often cannot be restored the way a solid one can, which matters on a chain you plan to keep. Before comparing karats on two chains, find out whether either is hollow. That one question tells you more than the stamp does.
Why online answers contradict each other
Because the answer depends on where the page was written.
10K is largely an American product. In Italy, chains start at 18K and the whole domestic market is built around it. Across much of South Asia, 22K is standard and 14K reads as low. Throughout the Gulf, 21K is a major category that barely exists in US retail. In the UK, 9K is common and is rarely stocked here.
So a European guide saying 18K is the floor for real jewelry and an American guide saying 14K is the sweet spot are both being straight with you. They are describing different markets.
If you inherited a chain stamped 875 and cannot find that number on an American purity chart, this is why. It is 21K, and it most likely came through the Gulf.
Buying in the US, 14K is the center of gravity. It is what shops stock, what pendants are made to match, and what most repair work is set up for.
A note on skin sensitivity
Reactions come from the alloy, not the gold. Nickel is usually the culprit, and it is a different issue from the copper reaction that causes green marks.
Alloy recipes differ between manufacturers, which means no karat is automatically safe and no karat is automatically a problem. Higher karat gold contains less alloy overall, so there is less of whatever might bother you, but that is a tendency and not a guarantee. If a reaction is persistent or severe, that is a question for a doctor rather than a jeweler.
If you have reacted to jewelry before, ask what is in the alloy before you buy. A seller worth dealing with will know or find out.

And for white gold, 14K over 18K. The plating stays right longer.
Once more, because it is the most useful sentence here: solid or hollow matters more than the number on the tag.
One more thing about stamps
US law allows a small legal tolerance on purity marks. Under the National Stamping Act, a gold article containing no solder may test up to 3 parts per thousand below its mark, and a soldered article up to 7 parts per thousand below.
In practice that means a soldered chain stamped 18K, or 750, can legally assay as low as 743 and still be marked correctly. It is a narrow allowance, and it is not a loophole anyone is hiding. But it is the reason two honestly marked chains of the same karat can test slightly differently.
Where the word "karat" comes from
Karat traces back to the carob seed, used as a weight reference in ancient markets. The usual telling is that carob seeds were prized for being unusually consistent in weight.
That part has been studied, and it is not true. Carob seeds vary about as much as any other seed. A myth sitting inside the origin of the word itself, which is fitting given how much else about gold gets repeated without checking.

Depends what you are optimizing for. 14K is harder and costs meaningfully less. 18K has deeper color and more gold in it. For a chain worn every day, 14K. For a chain worn on occasions where color is what you are paying for, 18K.

14K, for most people buying in the US. Go 10K for more chain per dollar. Go 18K if color matters more than hardness.
What is the most durable gold chain?
By metal alone, 10K, because it carries the most strengthening alloy. But solid beats hollow in any karat, so ask about construction first.
What does 417, 585 or 750 mean on a gold chain?
They are purity stamps. 417 is 10K, 585 is 14K, 750 is 18K. The number is parts of gold per thousand.
Is 10K gold real gold?

14K. White gold gets its color from rhodium plating, and 18K has more yellow gold underneath showing through as the plating thins.
Can I wear a 14K chain with an 18K pendant?
Yes, and plenty of people do. If you want an exact match, buy them together and compare in person. Photographs are unreliable for gold color.
