What 24K and .999 fine mean
Karat is a count of parts out of 24. Gold that is 24 parts out of 24 is 24K, pure gold. In the trade it is sold as .999 fine, 999 parts gold in every thousand, and stamped 999.
When a US jeweler says "gold" with no karat in front of it, the federal jewelry guides read that word as fine, 24 karat gold. Anything less must carry its karat right in front of the word, as in "14 Karat Gold".
Most jewelry is not 24K, because pure gold is soft, too soft to hold a link's shape. Chains, rings and bracelets are made in alloys, gold mixed with other metals to make it harder.
How much of the metal is gold, by karat, percent (the stamp in parentheses)

Which bill buyers pick
The 1 gram bill is the one most buyers pick: about two in three of the bills we sold were the 1 gram. The 10 gram carries the most gold and brings in the most money of the three.
The 1 gram and the 10 gram both sit among the top sellers of everything in our store over the past 90 days. Across all of our 24K gold sales this past year, the bills made more than half of the sales by value and more than eight in ten of the pieces sold.

How to buy one
Order a bill from its listing, buy it at the counter on 47th Street, or buy it by phone through a personal jeweler. Choosing between sizes? One 10 gram bill is one piece of gold, while ten 1 gram bills are ten pieces you can give one at a time. A jeweler can talk you through it.
How the price of gold by the gram is set
Gold at our counter is priced from the same few parts: the grams, times the purity (the share of the metal that is gold), at the day's gold price, plus the making and our margin. Our guide to how a gold chain is priced walks through it for a chain.

That is why two listings with the same grams can carry different prices: a 14K piece holds less gold than its weight, and a chain takes more work than a strip. It is also why a bill's price follows the gold price instead of staying fixed.
For a bill the purity is .999, so the gold part is simply its grams at the day's gold price. A bill is priced above the spot price, and the difference covers the making of the signed strip and our margin.

How to check the gold you bought
You do not have to take anyone's word for gold. Three things tell you what you have: the stamp, the scale and the paper.
The stamp. Look for 999 on 24K; the chart above gives the stamp for each karat. The federal jewelry guides note that under the National Stamping Act, a gold article with no solder has a permissible tolerance of three parts per thousand, or seven where the part tested contains solder.
The scale. The grams are on the listing and on your appraisal: weigh the piece and compare.
The paper. Every purchase comes with an official appraisal: carat and gram weights, diamond grade and color, current market value, and our corporate seal. For chains, the counter's rule is short: "Every chain is weighed, stamp-checked and appraised at the counter."
The guarantee behind it, word for word: "If anything you bought from us ever tests under the metal it was sold as, a gold karat or sterling silver, you get your money back in full, with no time limit."

Selling gold back to us
How it works: "We test the karat and weigh it in grams while you watch, then quote you a number." Bring two things: "To trade in gold: the gold itself and a valid photo ID." And come in person: "Trade-ins happen in person only."
Melt a piece of gold and the shape is gone. What is left is the gold itself: its grams and its karat. That is why a trade-in starts with a karat test and a scale, and why gold bought as .999 fine is the simplest gold there is to weigh and value.

Questions we hear at the counter
What does .999 fine gold mean?
It means 999 parts gold in every thousand, which is 24K, pure gold. On jewelry it is stamped 999. The Trax gold bills are .999 fine.
Is 24K better than 14K?
It holds more gold: 24K is 99.9% gold and 14K is 58.3%. But 24K is soft, too soft to hold a link's shape, so a chain you wear every day is better made in 14K or 10K. Buy 24K to own gold by the gram, or for a piece made to be shaped. Our karat guide compares the alloys.
