Most men buy a gold chain at 20, 22 or 24 inches. Of the 2,442 chains we sold in the twelve months to September 20, 2026, gold and silver, counted by the length on the ticket, 22 inches was the most bought, with 24 and 20 a step behind, and the three together were more than eight in ten. Twenty sits just below the collarbone, 22 at mid chest, 24 at the lower chest. A wide link wants a longer chain, a pendant wants a shorter one, and here is how we answer it across the glass.

Length is the question every man asks. Most charts online are drawn for women's necklaces and stop at 24 inches; a men's chain lives between 18 and 26, and the right answer depends on three things: where you want it to sit, how wide the link is, and whether a pendant is going on it.

Where each length sits

These are for an average man's neck, a 15.5 to 16.5 inch collar. A bigger neck uses up more of the chain, so the same length sits higher; a man with an 18 inch collar goes up one size to land in the same spot, and a smaller neck goes down one.

Read the two right-hand columns together. More than eight in ten chains we sold last year were 20, 22 or 24 inches, and 22 edged out 24 and 20 for the single most bought length. But we stock more 26, 28 and 30 inch listings than that share suggests, because the heavy Cubans need the room, and a man buying a 10 mm chain is a different buyer from the man buying a 3 mm rope.

Width changes the answer

A wide link needs a longer chain, for two reasons. The links are thick, so the inside of the chain, the part that goes around your neck, is shorter than the length on the ticket, and the wider the link the bigger the difference. And a heavy link has to lie flat to look right, which needs slack. So the same man who wears a 3 mm rope at 20 inches wears a 6 mm Cuban at 22 or 24 and a 10 mm at 24 to 26. On our own listings, the ropes and thin Cubans under 3 mm are offered mostly in 18 to 26 inches; the Cubans over 8 mm are offered at every length from 16 to 36, and nearly every 32, 34 and 36 inch listing on the site is a Cuban, most of them wide.

A pendant changes it again

A pendant hangs below the chain by its own height, so a pendant chain is bought a size shorter than a chain worn bare: 20 or 22 inches for most pendants, 18 for a small one worn high. The pendant should sit on the chest, not the stomach. If you are buying a chain and a pendant together, tell the desk the pendant's height and we cut the chain to put it where you want it. Layering

Two chains want two inches between them so each sits at its own level: a 20 and a 22, or a 22 and a 24. Put the thinner chain on top and the wider one below. Three chains is 18, 20 and 24, or 20, 22 and 26. Mixing links is fine; mixing karats is fine too, though the colors differ slightly between 10K, 14K and 18K yellow gold, so a matched pair is worth seeing in one light before you buy.

How to measure at home

  1. Take a shoelace, a phone charging cable or a piece of string.
  2. Drape it around your neck and let it fall where you want the chain to sit.
  3. Pinch the two ends where they meet and measure that length against a ruler or a tape.
  4. Round up to the next even number. Chains almost always come in even lengths; between two, take the longer one.

If you already own a chain you like, measure it end to end with the clasp closed, laid flat. That number is the length to buy again.

Between two lengths? Take the longer one

We extend or shorten any chain we sell, so the length you choose today is not the length you are stuck with. Still, when a man is between 22 and 24 we hand him the 24: a longer chain lies flatter, and a wide link needs the room. Ask the desk about the charge, if any, and whether you keep the cut links.

What men actually buy, by link

  • Rope, 2 to 3 mm: 18 to 24 inches. The 2 mm rope is the chain we sell most, by count; at that width 20, 22 or 24 inches is the length to choose, often under a pendant.
  • Franco, 2 to 4 mm: 20 to 24 inches, the pendant chain.
  • Curb, 3 to 5 mm: 22 to 24 inches, worn bare under or over a collar.
  • Miami Cuban, 2.5 to 6 mm: 22 or 24 inches. The Cuban that left the counter most last year, by count, was the 4.6 mm 10K Best Buy Cuban, with the thin 2.6 mm 14K solid Cuban next.
  • Miami Cuban, 8 mm and up: 24 to 30 inches, and the showpieces longer.

What is the most popular chain length for men?

Here, 22 inches, by a hair over 24 and 20. Together those three lengths were more than eight in ten of the chains we sold in the last year.

Is 20 inches too short for a man?

No. Twenty inches sits just below the collarbone on an average neck and is the classic length for a pendant. It is short for a wide Cuban, which wants 24 or longer.

Is 24 inches too long?

Twenty-four sits at the lower chest and shows over a crew neck. It is the right length for a chain worn on its own, especially a wide one, and the second most bought length here.
