Does sterling silver tarnish? Why 925 silver darkens, and how to clean it
by TraxNYC
From the counter at TraxNYC, 47th Street.
The short answer
- Yes, sterling silver tarnishes. 925 silver is 92.5 percent silver, the rest mostly copper, and silver reacts with sulfur in the air to form a dark film. Tarnish is what silver does; it is not a sign of a fake.
- It comes off. Soap and warm water for dirt, a silver polishing cloth for tarnish, and a foil and baking soda bath for a plain piece gone dark.
- Slow it down: wear it, dry it, and store it closed with an anti-tarnish strip.
- Skip the bath on stones, plating and blackened detail. That dark detail is the design.

How tarnish builds on sterling silver
Why sterling silver tarnishes
Pure silver is too soft for most jewelry, so sterling mixes in 7.5 percent other metal, usually copper. Silver reacts with sulfur in the air and makes silver sulfide, a thin film that turns a warm yellow, then brown, then black. It sits on the surface, and it comes off.
Damp air, sweat, perfume, lotion, hairspray, pool water and rubber bands speed it up. Wearing it, wiping it and closed storage slow it down.
Our Palladium Silver listings describe an alloy with palladium that helps resist tarnish.
How to clean sterling silver at home
- Soap and warm water for dirt: a drop of mild dish soap, a soft brush, a rinse, then dry it all the way.
- A silver polishing cloth for tarnish. Rub along a chain, not across the links, and move to a clean part of the cloth as it darkens.
- Foil, baking soda and hot water for a plain piece gone dark: line a bowl with foil, lay the silver on it, add baking soda and hot water, wait a few minutes, then rinse and dry. The tarnish lifts without rubbing.
- Dry it fully before it goes back in the box.

Clean it by the piece
| Piece | Clean it with | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| Plain silver: a chain, a band, a cross | Soap and water, the cloth, the foil bath when it has gone dark | Toothpaste and baking soda paste |
| Set with diamonds or other stones | Soap, warm water, a soft brush behind the stones, the cloth on the metal | The foil bath and silver dip |
| Blackened detail: skulls, lions, lettering | Soap and water, the cloth on the raised parts only | The bath and the dip, which take the black off |
| Gold-plated silver | A damp cloth, dried right away | Polishing cloths, soaking, brushing |
| Enamel | Soap and water | The dip and an ultrasonic cleaner |
What not to use on silver
- Toothpaste and baking soda paste. Both are abrasives, and they leave fine scratches.
- Bleach and pool chlorine. Besides the tarnish, chlorine goes after the solder at every joint.
- Silver dip on stones, plating or blackened detail.
- An ultrasonic cleaner on a stone-set, plated or glued piece.
- Paper towels. They can leave fine lines; use a soft cloth.
How to keep sterling silver from tarnishing
- Wear it. Silver that is worn and wiped tends to stay brighter than silver left out in the air.
- Last on, first off. Perfume, lotion and hairspray go on first. Take the silver off for the pool and the gym, and dry it after a shower.
- Store it closed: a pouch, or a zip bag with the air pressed out, one piece to a bag, with an anti-tarnish strip.
- Keep rubber bands away from it. Rubber carries sulfur.
Is tarnished silver fake?
No. Tarnish is what silver does, so a dark piece is no sign of a fake. It is no proof of solid silver either, since a silver-plated piece darkens too. Plating gives itself away at the wear points: the coat wears through at the clasp and on the links that rub, and a yellow or red metal shows underneath. Silver is not magnetic, so a magnet that grabs the piece itself means it is not solid silver; a pull only at the clasp can be its steel spring. No grab proves nothing on its own.

Silver care questions
Does sterling silver tarnish easily?
It depends on the air and on you. Damp air, sweat and perfume speed it up. A piece that is worn, wiped and stored closed darkens slowly, and the film comes off with a polishing cloth.
Can you shower with sterling silver?
Water alone does little, but soap film dulls it, so dry it after. Chlorine is the bigger problem: take it off for the pool and the hot tub.
Will sterling silver turn my skin green?
It can leave a dark or green mark on damp skin. That is sweat meeting the copper in the alloy, not an allergy, and it wipes off. Clean the piece and dry your skin after a workout.
Does 925 silver rust?
No. Rust is iron. Silver darkens instead, and the dark comes off.
Can I clean silver with toothpaste?
No. Toothpaste is an abrasive and leaves fine scratches. Soap and water take the dirt off, and a polishing cloth takes the tarnish.
