Best Silver Chains for Men: A 925 Sterling Buyer's Guide
by TraxNYC
From the jewelry store at TraxNYC, 47th Street.
The short answer
- 925 sterling silver is real silver. It is 92.5 percent pure silver, and the rest is mostly copper, which makes it hard enough to wear. Every silver chain we list names its metal as .925 silver.
- It darkens, and it comes back. Sterling tarnishes with air and sweat. Soap, warm water and a polishing cloth bring the shine back.
- Width sets the weight. Our silver chains list a median of 7 grams under 2.5 mm wide, 27.5 grams at 3.5 to 4.4 mm and 109 grams at 7 to 12 mm.
- The Miami Cuban sells most. About three in ten of the silver chains we sold in the last 90 days were Cubans, with the Franco and the rope close behind.

What 925 sterling silver is
Sterling silver is 925 parts in 1,000 pure silver: 92.5 percent. The other 7.5 percent is other metals, usually copper. Fine silver, 99.9 percent, is soft, so most chains are made in sterling, which holds a link's shape and a clasp.
A sterling piece is usually marked 925, .925, STER or Sterling. Every silver chain we list names its metal as .925 silver, and the listing gives its width and, on nearly all, its length and grams.
Standard sterling is mostly silver with a little copper and no nickel, so most people who react to nickel wear it fine. For one chain's exact alloy, ask the desk.
About one in eight of our silver chain listings are titled Palladium Silver. Their listings describe an alloy of over 90 percent silver with zinc, copper and palladium that helps resist tarnish. Their metal field reads .925 silver like the rest; whether they assay at 925, ask the desk.
Three names that are not sterling: silver-plated is a thin coat of silver over another metal, and nickel silver and German silver contain no silver at all.
Is it real silver? How to check a chain
A stamp is a claim, not proof. Three checks tell you more:
- The magnet. Silver is not magnetic. If a strong magnet grabs the chain, it is not solid silver. If it does not grab, that proves nothing on its own.
- The wear points. On a plated chain the coat wears through at the clasp and on the links that rub, and a yellow or red metal shows underneath.
- A jeweler's test. An acid test or an X-ray (XRF) reading tells a jeweler what the metal is.
Tarnish is not a sign of a fake. Sterling tarnishes because it is silver.
Behind every silver chain we sell stands our karat guarantee, from our refund policy:
“If anything you bought from TraxNYC tests under the gold karat or the sterling silver standard it was sold as, within one year of delivery, you choose: a replacement that tests as sold, or a full refund of the purchase price.”
So on a silver chain from us, the proof is the listing, which names the metal, and that guarantee.
Tarnish and care, in short
Sterling tarnishes, and the tarnish comes off. Sulfur in the air, sweat, perfume and pool water darken the surface; a silver polishing cloth, or a drop of mild soap in warm water, brings the shine back. Take it off for a swim or the gym, and store it dry. The full steps for silver are in does sterling silver tarnish, and how to clean it.

How much does a silver chain weigh?
Width decides it. The middle of our silver chains is just under 4 mm wide and lists about 27 grams, and every step up in width adds grams fast:
What our silver chains weigh, by width (median listed grams)
The link changes the grams too: our mariners and anchors run wider than our Miami Cubans at the median and still list less.
Read a listing's grams with its length. About seven in ten of our listings that print a weight offer several lengths under that one weight, so ask the desk for the grams at yours.
Two showpieces sit outside those medians: a custom 20 mm rope that lists 1,400 grams at 34 inches, and a Cuban 3.9 inches wide that lists 2,939 grams.
Which silver chain styles we list, and which sell
The Franco is about one in four of our silver chain listings, with the Miami Cuban close behind. Buyers pick the Cuban most, then the Franco and the rope:
| Style | Of our listings | Of pieces sold, 90 days | Middle width | Middle weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Franco | 25% | 25% | 3.75 mm | 31 g |
| Miami Cuban | 23% | 29% | 4.85 mm | 40 g |
| Mariner or anchor | 14% | 11% | 5.6 mm | 26.9 g |
| Rope | 11% | 21% | 3.0 mm | 20.5 g |
| Moon cut | 7% | 6% | 3.5 mm | 15.4 g |
Shares of our listings and of pieces sold; middle width and listed weight are medians. Listings and medians counted September 26, 2026, on our live silver chains; pieces sold in the 90 days to that date. Paperclip, rolo, curb, box, skull and iced links make up the rest.
- Franco: a square four-sided link that keeps a pendant straight. Silver Franco chains.
- Miami Cuban: flat interlocking links that lie flat on the chest. It takes about two in five of what buyers spend on our silver chains. Silver Miami Cuban chains.
- Rope: twisted strands that hide scratches. Silver rope chains.
- Mariner or anchor: one link under two names, an oval with a bar across its middle.
- Moon cut: a bead chain cut with flats that catch the light.
Most buyers go thin: about three in five of the silver chains we sold in the last 90 days were under 4 mm wide. Go wider when the chain is the whole look.

The top two of each of the three links buyers pick most, among our live silver chains over the last 90 days. The 9.5 mm Miami Cuban and the 3.6 mm rope took the most money; the 1.2 mm Franco and the 2.3 mm rope sold the most pieces.

★★★★★
“I absolutely love the chain.. although due to my lack of attention to detail I ordered a chain that is almost a choker on me! But the quality and packaging plus the delivery was way more than expected. … Next time I'll get one my size!”

A pendant on a silver chain
Weigh the pendant first. At the median, our 925 silver crosses weigh 15.7 grams and our silver Jesus pieces 34.3 grams. The heavier the pendant, the more the chain needs solid links and some width.
The Franco is the classic pendant chain: its square four-sided link keeps a pendant straight. Drop the chain through the bail before you buy; if it binds at the link's thickest point, the chain is too wide for that bail.

Silver or gold for a chain?
Silver gives you the look for far less, and a wide link without gold's weight. Gold darkens far less, is worth far more by weight and comes with our appraisal. Side by side:

Buy silver for the look you love. If grams for your money is the goal, look at gold: 10K vs 14K vs 18K compares the karats.
How much is a silver chain?
Every price is on its listing, and it moves with five things: the grams, the width, the length, solid or hollow, and the work in the link.
In silver the work counts most. Silver is a lot of bench work for its weight, and the metal is a small part of what you pay. Gram for gram, silver costs a small fraction of what gold does; today's gold price is on our gold price page.
So compare silver chains by width, build and finish, not by grams alone. Our live silver chains, with their prices, are on men's silver chains.

Questions we hear at the store
Where is the best place to buy a silver chain?
From a seller whose listing names the metal and prints the width, length and grams, who takes returns, and who stands behind the metal.
Our silver listings name the metal and nearly all print their grams, returns run fourteen days from delivery, and our karat guarantee covers sterling. We have about 4,470 reviews on Google, and our store has been on 47th Street since 2004.
Will a silver chain turn my neck green?
It can leave a dark or green mark on damp skin. That is sweat meeting the copper in the alloy, not an allergy, and it wipes off. Clean the chain, dry your skin after a workout, and the mark stops.
Can I shower or swim in a silver chain?
Dry it after a shower. Chlorine is the bigger problem: besides the tarnish, it goes after the solder at every joint, so the pool and the hot tub are where the chain comes off.
Solid or hollow silver chain?
Solid for daily wear and for a pendant. A hollow link is a tube of silver, light to wear, and a hard knock can dent it. At 4.5 mm, our solid Franco lists 57 grams and our hollow one 26.
How much does a 5 mm silver chain weigh?
It depends on the link and the build: our 4.8 mm Miami Cuban lists 38.4 grams and our 5 mm solid Franco 74 grams. Ask the desk for the grams at your length.
What length silver chain should a man wear?
Start at 24 or 22 inches. Our silver listings offer 24 inches most, on about four in five of them, and 24 and 22 inches, nearly tied, take more than half of all the chains we sold in the last twelve months.
Resizing and other alterations are done for you and are not returnable, so settle the length first.
Can I return a silver chain?
Yes: “Eligible merchandise may be returned within fourteen (14) calendar days of confirmed delivery, as determined by the shipping carrier’s delivery confirmation.”
It must be new, unworn and unaltered, and it goes back on our insured label once the desk okays it. A 5% restocking fee and the return shipping come off the refund. The details are in our refund policy.
