The short answer
- 22 or 24 inches for most men's pendants. A small piece worn high goes on an 18 or 20.
- A solid chain, never a thin hollow one. At the counter that is a solid Miami Cuban, a Franco or a rope.
- The width follows the pendant's grams. Under about 10 grams, a 2.5 to 4 mm link; 10 to 30 grams, 4 to 6 mm; over 30 grams, 6 mm and up.
- For example: a 14K cross, about 6 grams on our listings, rides a 2.5 to 4 mm link; a 14K Jesus piece, about 33 grams, a 6 mm solid Cuban at 24 inches.

What is in your hand
The grams are on the pendant's listing among our pendants; where a listing states none, ask. No listing? Any gram scale reads it, a kitchen scale included, or text 212-872-9692 a photo and ask.
The same type runs wide. 14K Jesus pieces on our listings usually run about 15 to 65 grams: a 15-gram piece sits in the 4 to 6 mm band, one over 30 in 6 mm and up.
A 14K cross usually runs about 3 to 14 grams, about four fifths of an inch wide and an inch and a quarter long.
The five checks, in order
- The pendant's grams. They pick your row of the table.
- Solid, not hollow. Solid means gold all the way through. Hollow means a thin wall of gold around air: the same width on a ruler, a fraction of the weight. Semi-solid is a trade word for a hollow-core link. Our gold chains are solid unless the listing says hollow or lightweight.
- Chain grams against pendant grams. In our experience the chain should match or outweigh the pendant, so the piece hangs straight and the clasp stays behind the neck.
- The length. Where the pendant should sit on your chest: the length section below.
- The bail. The chain and its clasp have to pass through it.
Why the pendant chain has to be solid
A bare chain spreads its weight along every link. A pendant puts all of it on the two or three links at the bail, and every bend folds those links with the pendant pulling on them.
A solid link flexes and comes back. In our experience a hollow wall folds, stays folded, and the fold is where the chain breaks.
The width, checked against the grams
Grams per inch on our makes, 14K, solid by the listing's title, counted September 25, 2026. The last column is that rate at 22 inches, to set beside the pendant's grams; a 24 is two more inches at the same rate.

- At the same stated width the Franco carries more metal than the Cuban: its four-sided box weave packs more gold, and a 3 mm Franco already outweighs a 4 mm Cuban. So in our experience a narrow chain under a medium pendant does better as a Franco, and a man who wants the width to show does better on the Miami Cuban.
- Franco above 4 mm: we have not measured it per inch; read the grams on the listing. At 4 mm and 22 inches it already outweighs a 33-gram Jesus piece.
- Curb is a flat, open link, light for its width: a light pendant only.
- Rope per inch: we have not measured that. Read the grams on the rope's listing; where it states none, ask.

One example. A 14K Jesus piece at about 33 grams on a 6 mm solid Cuban at 24 inches: 2.76 grams an inch on our makes, about 66 grams of chain, roughly double the pendant, so it hangs straight.
The same pendant on a 3 mm Cuban, about 20 grams, outweighs the chain, and in our experience it twists and pulls the clasp round to the front. The 6 mm is among our Miami Cuban chains, priced on its listing by the grams and the day's gold price, on our gold price page.

A karat mark is a share of pure gold
Gold is heavier than the metals it is mixed with, so the same link at the same width weighs more in 14K: on our makes a solid Miami Cuban at 8 mm runs about 4.67 grams per inch in 10K against 5.37 in 14K, about 15 percent more.

With a pendant on it, the 24 pulls ahead; chains sold alone are a near tie at 24 and 22.
Where each length sits on a man, from our chain length guide: 20 just below the collarbone, 22 at mid chest, 24 at the lower chest.
A pendant hangs below the chain by its own height: a Jesus piece about two and a half inches long adds about that much below the chain's line, so a pendant chain reads longer than the same chain bare.
Hold a ruler to your chest at the length in mind and add the pendant's own length under it; the listing carries both where we state them.

The 10K Jesus pieces on our listings are smaller pieces than the 14K ones; that is the gap in that row, not the karat, which moves the same make about 7 to 15 percent on our measured chain pairs, never a half.
The same cross in silver is often a heavier piece than in 14K on our listings.

The bail
Our listings carry no bail width, so there is no bail table here. At the counter we check it this way:
- Drop the chain through the bail. If it binds at the link's thickest point, the chain is too wide for that bail.
- Unless the bail is hinged, the clasp has to pass through too.
- In a set, the chain listed with the pendant is the one it hangs on.

Of the sets we sold in the last twelve months, more than a third were 24 inches; 22 next; 18 and 20 split the rest. Chains bought alone were 24 and 22, nearly tied. A 22 sits at mid chest and a 24 at the lower chest, and the pendant hangs below by its own height.
