A paperclip chain is a line of long, open oval links, shaped like a paper clip. Ours are gold paperclip chains in 14K yellow and white gold, most of them with light links and a solid 4.8 mm, from 4.5 mm to 7.7 mm wide, in 18 to 24 inches: worn alone, layered, or with a charm.

“With gold, you're always dealing with money. So first decide how much of it you want to put into the gold.” Trax, at the jewelry store on 47th Street

14K paperclip chains, 4.5 to 7.7 mm. The solid 4.8 mm weighs 25 grams at 22 inches.

Both chains bought in the year were narrow and 22 inches: the solid 4.8 mm and the white 4.5 mm.

Buyer's guide

How to choose a gold paperclip chain

Choose the width, then the length and the color of the gold

Pick the width first, since an open paperclip link looks bigger than the gold in it. A narrow one wears alone or layers well, and a wide one is the chain people notice. Take the solid chain for every day or to carry a pendant. Every chain here is 14K gold, and 22 inches is the safe length.

Width: how wide a gold paperclip chain should be

Choose the width before anything else, because it decides the look. Each paperclip link is a long, flat oval with an open middle, so the chain reads wider than the gold it holds. Under 6 mm, it wears quietly on its own or beside a finer chain. From 6.5 mm up, the links are big enough to be the whole piece. The narrow end is where shoppers landed. Both chains bought here in the past year were under 5 mm.

Length: an 18, 22 or 24 inch paperclip chain

Take 22 inches if you are not sure. Every chain here comes in that length. Eighteen sits on the collarbone and suits a narrow link worn alone. Twenty-two drops to the upper chest, where the flat links lie open and show their shape. Twenty-four falls lower, under an open collar or as the long strand of a stack. We shorten or lengthen any chain, and one we alter to fit you is final sale.

Layering: a paperclip chain alone, stacked or with a charm

Wear it alone first, then build on it. The open links look lighter than a rope or a curb of the same width, so a paperclip sits well beside a thinner chain. Space two chains about 2 inches apart in length so each keeps its own line. A charm with its own clasp can clip onto any open link and ride wherever you like. A pendant hangs from its bail, and the bails on our pendants adjust to the link.

Gold: 14K yellow or white gold paperclip chain, and is it real

Every chain here is 14K, 58.3 percent pure gold and hard enough for daily wear. Four are yellow, and the 4.5 mm is white. White gold usually wears a thin rhodium finish for its bright color, and the bench can renew it when it fades. Look for a 14K or 585 stamp, most often on or beside the clasp. No title here says gold-plated or gold-filled. For the same link in silver, see the silver paperclip chains, and every other gold link is with the men's gold chains.

Questions we get in the store

What is a paperclip chain?

A chain of long, flat oval links with open centers, shaped like the clip on a desk. The open links let skin show through, so it reads light and modern. Ours are 14K gold, from 4.5 to 7.7 mm wide.

Will a paperclip chain dent?

It can, if it takes a hard knock or gets crushed, so remove it before a workout and before bed. Worn with ordinary care it holds up day to day. For daily wear without the worry, take the solid 4.8 mm.

What width paperclip chain should I get?

Under 6 mm for a chain worn alone or layered with a finer one. From 6.5 mm up, the open links become the whole look. Both chains bought here in the year were narrow ones, the 4.5 and the 4.8 mm.

More questions we get

Can I put a pendant or charm on a paperclip chain?

Yes. Clip a charm onto any open link, or slide a pendant's bail onto the chain, and keep a heavy pendant on the solid one. Ask in the live chat which bail fits, or call or text 212-872-9692 from 10 AM ET.

What length paperclip chain is best?

Twenty-two inches. Every chain here comes in it. Eighteen hugs the collarbone. Twenty-four falls lower on the chest and makes the long strand when you layer two chains.

Do men wear paperclip chains?

Yes. A wide paperclip link at 22 or 24 inches reads bold on a man, alone or over a crew neck. Women wear the same chains too, often the narrow ones layered at 18 inches.

Is a 14K paperclip chain real gold?

Yes. Each one here is 14K, which is 58.3 percent gold, and no title calls one gold-plated or gold-filled. Look for a 14K or 585 stamp near the clasp. White gold usually carries a rhodium finish the bench can renew.

Can I return a paperclip chain?

Yes, for fourteen days after it arrives, unworn and unaltered. Message the desk before sending, and the chain travels on the store's return label. Five percent restocking and the return postage come off the refund. A chain sized to your length is final.

How much is a gold paperclip chain?

Each listing prints its own price, set by the grams, the 14K and the day's gold, plus the work in the link. For the number today, open the live chat, or call or text 212-872-9692 from 10 AM ET.

Gold Paperclip Chains in 14K

Paperclip chains at a glance

  • Gold: 14K yellow, and 14K white at 4.5 mm
  • Build: light links, and a solid 4.8 mm
  • Width: 4.5 mm to 7.7 mm
  • Length: 18 to 24 inches
  • Weight: 7.7 grams for the light-link 4.5 mm at 22 inches, 25 grams for the solid 4.8 mm at 22 inches

Are paperclip chains good for layering?

Yes. The open links read light beside a finer chain. Layer them 2 inches apart, an 18 with a 20, so each sits on its own line; our necklace length chart shows where each length falls.

Is a wide paperclip chain heavy?

Not the light-link ones: they weigh 7.7 to 22 grams, so even the 7.7 mm is light on the neck. The solid 4.8 mm carries more gold for its width.

Does white gold look like silver?

Close, and brighter: white gold is usually plated with rhodium for its bright white. Our guide to white gold vs yellow gold covers the care.

Every other link is on gold chains for men and 14K gold chains; for women, see gold necklaces for women. In sterling: silver paperclip chains.
