Buyer's guide

How to choose lab grown diamond jewelry

622 pieces here. More than half of what sold was an engagement ring or a pair of stud earrings.

The 1.50 ct lab-grown marquise led the rings sold. The 2 ctw lab-grown round pair led the studs.

Questions we get in the store

Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown stone is diamond through and through, crystallized carbon like a mined one, graded on the same color and clarity scale. Only a gem lab's instruments can tell the two apart.

Can I buy loose lab grown diamonds here?

Not on this page: every listing here is finished jewelry with its stones set. Ask about a loose stone in the live chat, or call or text 212-872-9692 from 10 AM ET. For your own design around a lab-grown stone, start on our custom project page.

Do lab grown diamonds come with a certificate?

Only a few listings say so. Some engagement rings here state that their center diamond is IGI certified, and no other listing names a grading lab. For any other piece, ask the live chat what paper comes with it before you pay, or text 212-872-9692 from 10 AM ET.

More questions we get

Do lab grown diamonds get cloudy or change color?

No. A lab-grown diamond keeps its color and its polish in normal wear, because it is as hard and stable as a mined stone. Lotion and skin oil dull it for a while, and warm soapy water with a soft brush brings the sparkle back.

What size lab grown diamond studs should I buy?

Start at one carat a stone, the size bought most here. A pair marked 2 ctw is that size, one carat on each ear. For something quieter, half a carat a stone makes the everyday pair.

How many carats should a lab grown engagement ring have?

Look at 1.5 to 3 carats for the center. About four engagement rings in five sold here held a stone in that range. The 1.50 carat center sold most of all. Read the center stone's carat, since some totals count side stones.

What gold are these lab grown diamonds set in?

Mostly 14K. Nearly four pieces in five here are that gold, and it keeps prongs tight through daily wear. You will also find 10K, 18K, platinum and silver, so check the metal on the listing before you choose.

Can I return lab grown diamond jewelry?

Yes, if unworn, unaltered and delivered no more than fourteen calendar days ago. The desk clears it and sends our insured label. The refund is less that label and five percent restocking. Resized rings, custom or made-to-order pieces and watches are final; bullion bar pieces are excluded.

About this collection
ABOUT THIS COLLECTION

Lab-Grown Diamond Jewelry: Rings, Studs, Tennis Chains and Pendants

Lab-grown diamond jewelry from 47th Street in New York: every piece here is set with lab-grown diamonds, from engagement rings and wedding bands to stud earrings, tennis chains and tennis bracelets, pendants and crosses, for women and for men. Most are 14K gold, with 10K, 18K, platinum and sterling silver beside them.

A lab-grown diamond is diamond: the same carbon crystal as a natural diamond, just as hard, returning light the same way. Your eye cannot tell them apart; a gem lab settles it, and the listing tells you which one you are buying.

“Choose lab-grown diamonds if you want the look, you do not mind wearing lab-grown, and you would rather put your money into gold or other gems. Choose natural diamonds if the piece is meant to be passed down to someone you love, because that question always comes up.” Trax, at the jewelry store on 47th Street since 2004.

At a glance

  • Metal: most in 14K gold; also 10K and 18K gold, platinum and .925 sterling silver.
  • Shapes: round leads; emerald, oval, marquise, pear, asscher, cushion, radiant, princess and heart too.
  • Grades: where a listing gives them, most read D to F color and VS clarity or better.
  • Studs: 0.20 to 10 carats total weight.
  • Tennis chains: about 2 to 7 mm wide.
  • Rings: sizes 2 to 15; some engagement rings come with an IGI report.
  • Video: many listings carry a video of the piece.

Lab-grown or natural: how can I tell?

Not by eye, and not with a pen tester. A screening machine sorts them and a gem lab confirms; many lab-grown stones carry a laser inscription. Read lab-grown diamond or natural diamond and how to tell if a diamond is real.

Looking for a loose lab-grown diamond?

Everything on this page is finished jewelry. For a loose stone to set, start at our loose diamond search or build a ring in the ring builder, and ask the desk about lab-grown stones in your shape and size.

How much is a lab-grown diamond?

Each listing prints its price, and nearly every one its carat weight, color and clarity, so compare stones grade for grade. The 4 Cs of diamonds and the diamond size chart show what each grade and carat means.

Can I see lab-grown diamonds in NYC?
