How much should an engagement ring cost?

How many carats should an engagement ring be?

Read the center carat, not the total carat weight, which adds the side stones. A one-carat round is about 6.5 mm across.
What do the color and clarity grades mean?
Color grades how white the stone is, D whitest; clarity grades how clean it is at ten times magnification; most centers here are D through G, VS or better. D, E and F are colorless; G through J read white once set. Cleanest first: flawless, VVS, VS, SI; VS is clean to the naked eye, SI2 often shows. Of those stating a grade, 126 of 148 are D through G and 123 of 151 VS or better; on the 28 SI stones, ask the desk what shows.
How do I find her ring size without asking?
A ring she wears on the ring finger of either hand gives it; size 7 sold most here, then 6 and 5, a third in half sizes. Measure it on the ring sizer on our men's rings page, or trace its inside on paper for the desk, and say which hand; the two can run about a half size apart.
