Pick the shape before anything else, because at one carat it decides how big the stone looks. A marquise, pear or oval faces up longer and larger than a round, and most rings bought here in the year were marquise. Then choose grown or mined. Both are real diamonds, and here the grown centers carry the higher grades. Read the center carat, not the total, and set it in 14K for daily wear.
Shape: which diamond shape looks biggest at 1 carat
A marquise looks biggest at one carat, then a pear and an oval, because their weight runs into length. A one-carat marquise faces up about 10.5 by 5 mm. A round of the same weight is about 6.5 mm across, and the table sets out every shape. Buyers here leaned toward length, and marquise rings made up most of what sold in the year. Round is on half the listings and stays the classic, and a princess faces up smallest. The points of a marquise or pear chip first, so check that a prong covers each tip.
Lab or mined: lab-grown vs natural 1 carat diamonds
Grown and mined are both diamond, judged on one scale, and at this size the grown ones here carry the higher grades. Every grown center is D, E or F color and VS or cleaner. About half the mined centers print SI clarity, which usually looks clean once set but should be seen first. Nearly every ring bought here in the year had a grown center. A mined stone is the one the earth made, and some buyers want exactly that. For more grown centers, see the lab-grown engagement rings.
Carat: 1 carat center vs total carat weight
Read the center carat and set the total aside. Every center here weighs from 1 carat to 1.34, and seven sit at exactly 1. Total carat weight adds the small stones, and on six rings those outweigh the center. Skip the chase for a decimal, since a center a third heavier sits only about a tenth wider. Two listings name an IGI report, so for any other ring ask us whether a report backs the center. For a bigger look, step up to 2 carat engagement rings.
Setting and gold: plain band, hidden halo or halo, in 14K
A slim band makes a one-carat center look bigger, and the rings bought most here in the year are light, about 2 grams of gold. The hidden halo, small diamonds tucked under the center and seen only from the side, sold second most in the year. Two rings wear a full halo, which reads a size larger, and two come as sets with their band. Take 14K. It is harder than 18K, every ring bought here in the year was 14K, and most come in white or yellow. Choose her wedding band at the same time so the two sit flush.
Her size: 1 carat engagement ring sizes and resizing
Have one of her own rings from that finger measured, and tell us which hand. Most rings here offer each half size, 5 through 8. Four run all the way from 4 to 9, and one comes in a single size, 6.25. The ring size chart shows how to read a ring at home. Settle the size before checkout, since the refund policy makes any resized ring final sale.
