How much should an engagement ring cost? What sets the price, and what a 1 carat diamond costs, lab-grown and natural
by TraxNYC
There is no right amount to spend on an engagement ring: the two or three months' pay rule came from diamond advertising, not from jewelers, so set the number you are comfortable with first. Lab-grown or natural moves the price most: in our own case on October 8, 2026, 14K engagement rings with a natural center of about 1 carat listed at roughly five to ten times the ones with a lab-grown center of the same weight.
The short answer
- Decide the number, then where it goes. The center stone is where the choices that move the price are made.
- The same money buys a bigger lab-grown stone. A lab-grown diamond has no trade price list behind it the way a natural diamond does.
- Then carat, then the grades. A natural diamond's price climbs faster than its weight and jumps at the half and whole carat.
- Every price is on its listing. This page explains what moves it, so you can compare two rings fairly.

How much should an engagement ring cost?
As much as you are comfortable spending. The rule you may have heard, two or three months' pay, was written by diamond advertising decades ago, and nobody on 47th Street will hold you to it.
A better way: decide the number first, then decide where it goes. The center stone is where the choices that move the price are made.
What sets the price of an engagement ring
| What moves the price | What it does | Where you can save |
|---|---|---|
| Lab-grown or natural | The biggest difference: a natural diamond is priced against a weekly trade list; a lab-grown diamond has none and costs a fraction. | A lab-grown center |
| Carat | A natural diamond's price climbs faster than its weight and jumps at the half and whole carat; lab-grown prices climb more gently. | A stone just under the line, 0.90 instead of 1.00 |
| Shape | Rounds cost the most per carat; oval, pear and marquise look larger for the weight. | A long shape |
| Color | D, E and F are colorless. G to J read white once set, sooner in yellow or rose gold. | G or H, in yellow or rose gold |
| Clarity | VS grades are clean to the eye; SI1 usually is, SI2 often is not. | VS2 or SI1 you have seen on video |
| Cut | The sparkle: how well the stone returns light. | Not here |
| Metal and setting | A halo or a pave band adds stones and bench work. | A solitaire on a plain 14K band |
The trade's general experience. What the grade letters mean: the 4 C's of diamonds.
How much is a 1 carat diamond?
Where it formed decides it first: in our own case on October 8, 2026, the natural 1 carat engagement rings listed at roughly five to ten times the lab-grown ones. Grades and settings differ from ring to ring, so read that as a guide, not a quote.
Size does not change with origin: a 1 carat round is about 6.5 mm across either way. How each carat looks on the hand is in our diamond size chart.
About the same weight, once in each: a lab-grown radiant and a natural princess, two cornered cuts that both sit below a round per carat.

From the store
“The jewelry business is about trust. You will not learn everything there is to know before you buy, so buy from someone who will still be around, and who treats you with dignity. I have seen customers start over with a new jeweler because they picked the one who fooled them best: the one who made them feel good at the store and bad once they understood what they bought.”
Lab-grown diamond prices
A lab-grown diamond is diamond, grown in a laboratory instead of formed in the earth. It has no trade price list the way a natural diamond does.
That is why the same money buys a much bigger lab-grown stone. In our case on October 8, 2026, a 14K lab-grown ring with a 2 carat center listed at about twice the 1 carat, and a 3 carat at a little under two and a half times.
How the two are told apart and priced: lab-grown diamond or natural diamond. Shop lab-grown diamond engagement rings or all lab-grown diamond jewelry.
What to check before you pay
- Natural or lab-grown, in writing. The listing should state the center stone's origin. If it does not, ask before you pay.
- The center, apart from the sides. The carat of the center stone on its own, with its color and clarity; a total carat weight adds the small stones in.
- The paper. Where a ring comes with a grading report, the listing names it, and the report's number should match the stone.
- The stone itself. Every stone is shown in person or on video before you decide.
- Her size. Resizing and other alterations are done for you and are not returnable, so settle it first with our ring size chart.
Five ways to get more ring for the same money
- Buy just under the line. A 0.90 carat stone looks nearly the same as a 1.00 and sits under the price jump.
- Choose a long shape. Oval, pear and marquise spread across the finger.
- Let the metal help the color. In yellow or rose gold, a G or H center reads white.
- Buy clean to the eye. A VS2 or SI1 you have seen on video can look the same across a table as a VVS.
- Put the money in the center. A solitaire on a plain 14K band spends it on the stone; the wedding band can come later.

Questions we hear at the store
Is three months' salary the rule for an engagement ring?
No. It began as a line in diamond advertising. Set the number you are comfortable with, then choose where it goes: lab-grown or natural first, then carat, then the grades.
How much is a 2 carat diamond?
Origin decides it before anything else. In our case on October 8, 2026, a 14K lab-grown ring with a 2 carat center listed at about twice a 1 carat one. Natural stones climb faster with weight, because big natural diamonds are rarer. The listing carries the price.
Why are lab-grown diamonds so much cheaper?
A lab-grown diamond is grown in weeks in a machine instead of mined, and no trade list or scarcity stands behind its price. Grade for grade, it costs a fraction of a natural diamond.
What is the average engagement ring cost?
Surveys of couples publish an average every year, and it moves with what people buy, lab-grown or natural. An average is not your number: start from what you are comfortable spending, then spend it on the center stone.
