Whose finger it is, the size, the gold and the diamond, in the order a jeweler asks
Know whose finger it is, then measure that finger before you fall for a design. Men's rings here are built heavy and sized larger. Women's are fine and light, and the stone does the work. Gold in 14K is the right choice for a ring you never take off. Read on the listing whether a diamond is lab-grown or natural, and ask the live chat when the size you need is missing.
Him or her: men's rings, women's rings and rings for both
Start with whose hand it is, because the two halves of the case differ. A men's ring is built heavy, and the middle 14K men's ring weighs about 15 grams. A women's ring is fine and light, near 3.5 grams in 14K, and the stone carries the look. About six rings in ten are made for men, and the engagement rings are nearly all made for women. Each side has its own guide, in men's rings and women's rings.
Ring size: how to measure ring size at home, and half sizes
Get the number before the design, because we cannot take back a ring sized to your finger. Wrap a thin paper strip around the base of the finger, mark where the ends meet, and read the length on our ring size chart. A typical women's ring here runs sizes 5 to 9, a men's ring 8 to 12. Nine rings in ten offer half sizes, so order the half you read. Many eternity bands come in a single size, so ask first.
Metal: 14K gold, 10K, 18K, platinum or silver rings
Buy 14K for daily wear. Two rings in three here are 14K, and the 14K rings took nearly nine in ten of the gold rings bought in the year. 18K is a deeper yellow and softer, so it shows wear sooner. 10K is the hardest and the palest. Three rings in four can be ordered in yellow, white or rose, and no title says plated. Silver is the surprise: about one ring in eleven, yet close to four of every ten rings sold in the year. The lion, the skull and the Cuban link carried it.
Diamonds: lab-grown or natural diamond rings
Grown or mined, the stone is the same carbon crystal, and only a machine tells them apart. Pick grown when the size and the fire are what matter, and natural when the stone should come out of the earth. About four engagement rings in five bought in the year were lab-grown, and the marquise led them. Most other diamond rings here list natural stones, and nearly every listing names the origin, so read it before you pay. For sapphire and ruby, see gemstone rings, and lab-grown or natural covers the jeweler's tests.
Buying: custom rings, made to order, resizing and returns
If a listing lacks your size, karat or color, open the live chat first, or call or text 212-872-9692 from 10 AM ET. For your own design, send a photo or sketch through the chat, or start at custom rings. Some listings say a ring is made to order in your size and give the wait. Resized, custom and made-to-order rings stay with you. Any other ring but a coin ring can come home to us within fourteen calendar days of the day it lands, never worn or altered, once the desk says yes. It rides back on a label we issue, and the refund arrives short of the return postage and a five percent restocking charge.
