How to choose gemstone rings
Match the stone to your days, then pick the setting, the size and silver or gold
Choose the stone for how hard the ring will work. Sapphire and ruby shrug off the knocks of daily wear, so start there for a ring that never comes off. Opal is soft and wants a gentler life, yet opals were more than half of the rings sold, most of them sterling silver. Measure the finger before you order, and ask us whether a stone is mined or lab-made, since most listings do not say.

Which gemstone holds up best in a ring worn every day?
Sapphire or ruby, both corundum. Of the stones on these rings, only diamond is harder, so a desk edge or a car door rarely leaves a mark. Topaz and garnet come next. Keep opal and emerald for days when your hands do lighter work.
What sizes do the men's and women's rings come in?
For men, most rings here offer 9 through 11, and many go further. For women, most offer 5 through 8. Half sizes come on nearly every ring, and the opal pinky ring goes down to 2. Ask us for any size missing.
Which setting keeps a gemstone safest?
A bezel protects it best, since a rim of metal covers the stone's whole edge. Choose one for opal or emerald. Prongs show more of the stone and hold it on most rings. A burnish setting sits flush, with nothing to catch.

Are the stones natural or lab-made?
Usually the listing does not say, so ask us before you buy. Where one does, it most often says natural, and a few rings are marked lab-made or synthetic. Either way the stone is the same mineral and takes the same wear.
What is the Starry Night ring?
It is one opal design, made in plain sterling silver, in silver with a halo of diamonds around the opal, and in 14K gold. The silver halo ring was the ring bought most, and the plain silver one came third.
Can I wear an opal ring every day?
Yes, with some care. Opal holds water and is softer than most stones here, so a knock or a jump from heat to cold can crack it. Take it off for the gym and the dishes, and keep it out of ultrasonic cleaners.
Can a gemstone ring be resized?
Usually, when the band has plain metal to work with, most often by a size or two either way. A band with stones all around it rarely can. Ask us before you order, since a ring we resize for you cannot be returned.
Can I return a gemstone ring?
Yes, unless it was resized or custom made. Clear it in the live chat, or with a call or text to 212-872-9692 from 10 AM ET, then send it on our insured label, unworn and unaltered, to reach us within fourteen calendar days of delivery. The refund is less five percent and the return shipping.
