Gemstone Jewelry

690 pieces in 5 kinds

“Buy jewelry you fall in love with: something that makes you happy every time you put it on.” Trax, at the counter on 47th Street

686 pieces, sapphire the stone seen most. They are mostly 14K gold, and pendants sold best.

The tiger's eye eagle claw in silver led the year with 256 sold, and tiger eye beads topped the bracelets.

Gemstone jewelry here is built around a colored stone. Sapphire leads, on about four pieces in ten, then ruby, emerald and opal, with amethyst, topaz, garnet, citrine, aquamarine and pearl beside them. Rings are the biggest share, then pendants, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and chains, for men and women. About three pieces in four are 14K gold; the rest are 10K, 18K, .925 silver and a few 24K and platinum pieces. More than half carry diamonds too.

Buyer's guide

How to choose gemstone jewelry

Choose a stone hard enough for the wear, then the piece, gold or silver, and the size

Pick the stone for the wear it will get. Sapphire and ruby can take a ring's daily knocks, while opal and pearl are softer and do better on a pendant or at the ear. Most pieces here are 14K gold, hard enough to keep a stone tight in its setting. Pendants were nearly half of what sold, and a pendant spares a softer stone most of the knocks.

Which gemstone: sapphire, ruby, emerald and opal jewelry for every day

Choose sapphire or ruby for a ring or bracelet you never take off. Both are corundum, and at 9 on the Mohs scale only diamond is harder. Sapphire is the main stone on nearly half the pieces here, blue most often, and pink was the color bought next. Emerald reaches about 8, yet the flaws inside it let a hard knock chip it, so wear it in a bezel or on a pendant. Opal sits near 6 and pearl lower, so keep both away from rough work.

Tiger's eye and opal: the eagle claw pendant, opal rings and bead bracelets

Take tiger's eye for a stone that stands up to daily wear. It is a quartz, and the silver eagle claw that holds one was the piece bought most here. The bead bracelets string stones such as tiger eye, turquoise, malachite or pearl between 14K gold beads, and every one slides to fit. Opal here comes mostly as rings and pendants. The silver Starry Night ring sets one in a diamond halo, and it was the ring bought most.

The piece: gemstone pendants, rings, earrings and necklaces

Start with a pendant, since it rests on the chest, clear of desks and doorframes. Most pendants here are listed without a chain, so add one, or take a pendant set, which comes with its chain. Necklaces and chains mostly run 18 to 24 inches. At 18 a chain sits at the collarbone. A woman's ring here typically offers sizes 5 through 8. A man's runs 9 through 11, half sizes included. Flower clusters make up most of the earrings, and the heart-shaped pairs sold well.

Gold or silver: 14K gold and sterling silver gemstone jewelry

Take 14K gold for a piece you wear every day. Nearly four pieces in five here are 14K, and most gold pieces come in yellow, white or rose. Silver is a small corner of the case, yet more than four pieces in ten sold were silver, most of them pendants and opal rings. Silver darkens with air and time, so rub it with a polishing cloth and store it sealed. Yellow gold warms a red stone, and white gold keeps a blue one cool.

Natural or lab: natural, lab-grown and synthetic gemstones

Ask us before you pay whether a colored stone is natural or lab-grown, and whether it was treated, because more than nine listings in ten do not say. Where a listing does name the origin, it most often says natural. A few say synthetic or lab-grown, among them a synthetic ruby ring and a lab-grown emerald tennis bracelet.

Every count on this card is from the 686 pieces live here on September 28, 2026 and what this page sold in the year to that day; prices are on the listings. Each piece counts once, under its main stone. The hardness column is the Mohs scale, on which diamond scores 10. Pearl, citrine, the other stones and the pieces that name no colored stone sit outside the rows.

Questions we get at the counter

Which gemstone is best for jewelry worn every day?

Sapphire or ruby. They are one mineral, corundum, and nothing here but the diamonds is harder, so either can sit in a ring worn daily for years. Topaz is close behind. Opal and pearl are soft, so save them for gentler days.

Is a lab-grown gemstone the same as a natural one?

In what it is and how it wears, yes. A lab-grown ruby or sapphire is corundum, just as a mined one is, with the same hardness and the same care. The difference is where it formed, in a lab or in the ground.

Which gemstone is my birthstone?

On the usual modern list, garnet is January's, amethyst February's, aquamarine March's, diamond April's, emerald May's, pearl June's, ruby July's, peridot August's, sapphire September's, opal October's, topaz November's and turquoise December's. Sapphire, ruby, emerald and opal carry most pieces here.

More questions we get

Can I wear opal jewelry every day?

Yes, on a pendant or earrings, where it is seldom knocked. Opal is soft and holds water inside, so a hard blow or a quick change of heat can crack it. Take an opal ring off for the gym, and keep perfume off it.

What is tiger's eye?

It is a quartz shot through with fine fibers that throw a moving band of golden light across the stone. At about 7 for hardness it takes daily wear, but keep it out of soaking water and the ultrasonic cleaner, as the claw's listing warns.

Do the pendants come with a chain?

Most do not. Only a few pendants list a chain length, and the tiger's eye eagle claw is sold as the pendant alone. Take a pendant set to get the chain with it, or ask us to match a chain to any pendant.

What ring sizes do these gemstone rings come in?

Most women's rings take any size from 5 to 8, with the halves. Most men's take any size from 9 to 11. Across the case, sizes reach from 2 up to 15, so ask us for one you do not see.

Can I return gemstone jewelry?

Yes, if it stays unworn and unaltered, for fourteen calendar days after delivery. Write in the live chat first, or ring or text the desk on 212-872-9692 from 10 AM ET, and it rides on our insured label. Five percent restocking and return shipping come off. Custom, made-to-order and resized work is final.

Gemstone Jewelry: Ruby, Sapphire, Opal and More

How to choose: read the stone line on the listing for the stone, its color and carat weight, and whether it is natural or lab-grown where it says so. Sapphire and ruby are hard enough for a ring worn every day; opal and emerald want gentler wear, so they suit a pendant or earrings best. Buying for a birthday? Start from birthstones by month.

By piece: sapphire rings, gemstone rings and gemstone pendants; for men, men's gemstone jewelry and men's gemstone bracelets. Call or text 212-872-9692, or visit the showroom.
