Both are solid gold; the difference is the link. A solid link is metal all the way through; a hollow link is the same gold formed into a tube, so in our own Miami Cuban listings a hollow chain weighs a third to a half of a solid one at the same width. That is why two chains that look identical can be priced so far apart. Hollow is real gold and the right buy for some men; solid is the one that carries a pendant, takes a knock and gets handed down.

Every week somebody stands in the store holding two chains that look identical and asks why one costs so much less. Nine times out of ten the answer is one word: hollow. It is not a trick and it is not a fake. It is a different way of building the same link, and it is the right buy for some men and the wrong buy for others. Here is the whole trade, the way we explain it across the glass.

What the three words mean

Solid. Every link is gold all the way through. Cut one open and it is metal to the center.

Hollow. Every link is a tube. The outside is the same gold, the same karat, the same stamp; the inside is air. The chain is real gold at the same karat; there is simply less of it than the width suggests, and the gram weight on the listing tells you how much.

Semi-solid. A tube with a thick wall, or a link that is solid in some places and hollow in others. It sits between the two in weight, in strength and in price. Different makers draw the line in different places, so the word means less than the gram weight does. When a listing of ours says semi-solid, the weight is on the listing; trust the weight.

Weight: the number that tells the truth

Weight is the honest measure, because a chain is mostly its gold and gold has a weight nobody can argue with. In our own 14K solid Miami Cuban listings where a single length is listed, the median weight per inch runs about 1.9 grams at 5 mm, 2.8 grams at 6 mm, 5.4 grams at 8 mm and 8.4 grams at 10 mm. So a solid 8 mm at 24 inches is about 129 grams, and a solid 10 mm at 24 inches about 201. The hollow 14K Cubans run a third to a half of that at the same width: about 22 grams at 5.5 mm against 46 to 66 solid at 5 to 6 mm, about 58 grams at 9 mm against 159. On rope the gap is about the same: a 14K 2 mm rope is about 3 grams hollow against 9 solid at 24 inches, and a 4 mm about 8 against 31. The full ladder is in How much does a gold chain weigh?

That gap is the whole story. It is why a hollow chain is lighter on the neck and easier on the ticket, and also why it dents more easily and is harder to fix. Less metal, both ways.

Durability

A solid link takes a knock and keeps its shape. A hollow link takes the same knock and can dent, and a dented tube link kinks; once it kinks the chain never hangs straight again at that spot. A solid chain also shrugs off the daily pull of a pendant. A hollow chain under a heavy pendant stretches at the top links over months, then one link opens. A heavy pendant belongs on a solid chain; a light one is fine on hollow or semi-solid.

Hollow is not fragile in the sense of breaking in a week. Worn as a chain, with nothing hanging from it, taken off at night and kept out of the gym, a well-made hollow rope or Cuban lasts for years. It is fragile in the sense that when something does go wrong, it goes wrong in a way that is hard to undo.

Repairs

This is the part the price tag does not show you. A solid link that opens is soldered shut at the bench and you cannot find the spot afterwards. A hollow link that opens or kinks is a thin gold tube; put the torch to it and the wall collapses or melts before the solder flows. Some hollow repairs can be done, some cannot, and the ones that can are fiddly. Semi-solid is somewhere between. Bring it in and ask; the bench tells you straight whether it is a repair or a replacement, and you should ask which before any work starts.

We extend or shorten any chain; on a solid chain it is routine bench work, and a solid chain takes a new clasp the same way.

Price, without numbers

A gold chain is priced on three things: the gold in it, the work in it, and the maker's margin. Karat and weight set the first. Hollow cuts the weight at a given width, so the gold cost falls, and that is why a hollow 8 mm can cost what a solid 5 mm costs. The labor share is actually higher on a good hollow chain, because drawing and forming thin tube is skilled work, but the metal saving dominates.

The flip side: when gold moves, a solid chain moves with it, because it is mostly gold. A hollow chain is mostly labor and air, so it holds less of its ticket as metal. A chain is jewelry first, but if trade-in value matters to you at all, that argument is solid's: a gold chain holds its value in the metal, its grams and its karat, and we take chains in trade at any time toward the next one.

Who should buy which

Buy solid if: you will wear it every day for years; you want to hang a pendant on it; you are a person who forgets to take jewelry off; you may want it resized later; you want it to be worth close to its metal when you trade it in for the next one; or it is going to be handed down. Most men buying their one good chain should buy solid, and at a narrower width if that is what the budget says. A solid 5 mm is a better chain than a hollow 8 mm for daily life, every time.

Buy hollow if: you want a wide chain for the look at a lighter weight, for occasions rather than every day; a heavy chain bothers your neck; you want the links that wear well hollow, a hollow Franco has a beautiful look and can feel even fuller on the neck than a solid one; or you are buying a first chain, a gift, or a chain for a young man who will outgrow it. Hollow rope at 2 mm is the chain we sell most by count: last year it was our top-selling gold chain by units, and among our best sellers rope outsold every other gold link. It wears light and looks right, and at that width the risk is small.

Buy semi-solid if: you want most of the look and feel of solid at 6 to 10 mm and the full solid weight is more than you want to carry or pay for. Read the gram weight and compare it to the solid at the same width; that tells you how much of the way there it is.

How to tell what you are holding

Weigh it, or ask for the weight. Width, length and karat being equal, the lighter chain is the hollow one, and it is not close. Look at the links near the clasp; a hollow link often shows a seam or an open end under a loupe. Tap it on the glass; solid sounds dull and heavy, hollow sounds thin. And read the listing.

Two things the table tells you. First, by title hollow lives in 10K and 14K: 32 and 77 listings say so, and not one 18K listing on the page does, because soft high-karat gold in a thin wall is a bad idea. The links stocked hollow here are the Cuban, the Franco, the rope, the curb and the box, plus a few paperclips. Second, six in ten titles say the build in grams rather than in words; where a listing does not say solid or hollow, the weight on the listing is your guide, and the desk will tell you on the phone.
