Ankur: Still Looking for the One
The curb chain was the standard when he started. Now it's rope and Franco, and the three things he checks on every chain.
How long have you been working on 47th Street, and how did you start?
AnkurAbout 12, 13 years. One of my cousins was working with Maks earlier, and it was literally Maks who asked me to come and do something on the street. So I figured out where the room to grow was, and we decided we're going to go with gold chains. That's how we started.
What chain did everyone want when you first started, and what is it now?
AnkurGold chain styles and designs change with time. When I started, the curb chain was the go-to chain: a solid curb chain, 3, 4, 5 millimeter gauge, 10 and 14K. That was the standard back then.
Now the sky's the limit. It all depends on your liking, your budget, the karats. But still, ropes and Francos are evergreen. Can't go wrong.
What should a buyer check before buying a gold chain?
AnkurMostly it all comes down to your preferences: what you want in your look, in your style. And always make sure you get what you pay for.
If it says 14K, make sure it's stamped. A lot of times it's stamped 585, or it'll say 14K. A lot of times it will also say where it was made, so it could even say "Made in Italy," "Made in Turkey." So make sure those stamps are there, and know the purity that you're paying for.
What mistake do you see wholesale buyers make the most?
AnkurA lot of times, if you don't know the manufacturer that you're working with... You have to know what kind of finishes they produce at the end. If it's not what your client wants, then a lot of times you end up with dead inventory for no reason, and we're talking about big bucks here.
Because when you place an order and get the manufacturer involved, there's always a minimum quantity that needs to be produced in order for you to get the go-ahead with your factory.

What's one piece you'll never forget?
AnkurI've yet to come across that one. But soon, hopefully.
