The short answer
- Read the listing before you read the price. Every live Rolex listing on our site names the metal; about 97 in 100 name the dial, about 95 in 100 give the reference number and about two in three state the year.
- Check what comes with the watch. About three in five of our live Rolex listings come with the card or papers; about two in five say plainly that they do not. On about six in seven, the box is offered as an add-on rather than included.
- Ask to see it. Text or call the watch desk and ask for a video of the watch, or see it at the counter on 47th Street.
- Watches are final sale. Our refund policy lists "Watches" among the items that are "strictly non-returnable and non-refundable". Decide before you buy, not after.

TraxNYC is an independent jeweler in the Diamond District, on 47th Street since 2004. Next to the chains and the diamonds, we sell pre-owned watches, Rolex among them. This page is for the buyer who has found a pre-owned Rolex on our site, or anywhere, and wants to know what to check before paying for it.

A good pre-owned listing answers five questions before you ask them: the reference number, the year, the dial, the metal, and whether the card or papers come with it. It should also say whether the box is included. Here is how often the live listings on our Rolex page answer each one.

The year is the one most often missing, and a few listings give an approximate year or a range, such as "Approx. 1979".
The year and the papers travel together on our listings. Of the listings that state a year, 87% also say the card or papers are included. Of the listings with no year, fewer than one in ten do.

What moves a pre-owned Rolex's price
We do not print prices on this page; each listing carries its own. Here is what, in the trade, moves the price of one pre-owned Rolex against another, and where each factor shows on our listings.

Model and reference. In the trade, the model sets the starting point more than anything else. Two watches that look alike from across a room can carry very different references, and the reference is how a buyer, a seller or a watchmaker knows exactly which watch is meant: the model, the case size, the bezel, the metal.
Metal. Steel, two-tone steel and gold, and solid gold versions of the same model sit at different levels in the trade, and solid gold carries the gold's own value inside it.
Year and condition. In the trade, a newer watch in clean condition usually asks more than an older one of the same reference that shows its years, though some older references are wanted for their age. Look closely at the photos, and ask for a video in good light.

Card, papers and box. In the trade, a pre-owned Rolex that still has its original card or papers, and its box, usually asks more than the same watch without them. The listing tells you plainly which one you are looking at, so you compare like with like.
Factory or aftermarket parts. A diamond dial or a gold bezel added after the watch left the factory changes how the trade values it. A listing with such a part says so, for example: "Please note the diamond dial is aftermarket."
The market. Pre-owned Rolex prices move with demand in the trade, and some references move more than others. If you are watching a model, text the desk and ask about it.
How to read a listing before you buy
Take one of the watches above as the example: the 2021 Rolex GMT-Master II 40mm in Oystersteel, the one people call "Pepsi" for its blue and red bezel. The title gives you the year (2021), the model, the case size (40mm) and the metal (Oystersteel).
The listing gives the reference, 126710BLRO, and says what comes with it: the card is included, and the box is available as an add-on. Read every listing for the same things, in this order.
- The reference number. Match it to the model and the metal in the title. If a listing has no reference, ask for it before anything else.
- The year. If it is missing, or given as a range, ask the watch desk what the year is read from.
- The dial and the bezel. Read the words, then look at the photos. Check the listing for the word "aftermarket".
- What comes with it. Card or papers included, or not. Box included, or an add-on, or no box.
- The final-sale rule. Settle every question before you pay.

What the last digit of the reference tells you
In the trade, the last digit of a modern Rolex reference usually points to the metal, and letters after the number usually describe the bezel. It is a reading aid, not a rule to buy on: some references break the pattern, and the listing and the watch itself settle it.

How to see the watch before you decide
Our Rolex listings carry a "Text a watch specialist" button. On the listing we checked, it opens a text to 212-872-9692 with the watch's name, reference and item number already written in, so the desk knows which watch you mean.
From there you can ask anything the listing does not answer: a closer look at the dial, the clasp, the case sides, the card if it comes with one, and a video of the watch.

Our jewelry has a return window: "Eligible merchandise may be returned within fourteen (14) calendar days of confirmed delivery, as determined by the shipping carrier’s delivery confirmation." That window does not cover watches.
Under the heading "Non-Returnable & Final Sale Items", our refund policy lists "Watches" among the items that are "strictly non-returnable and non-refundable", and adds: "These exclusions are absolute and apply regardless of condition or wear."

Can I return a watch I bought from you?

Does every watch come with its box and papers?

What does "Box Available as an Add On" mean?
The watch is sold without a box, and a box can be added to the order. Ask the watch desk about it when you text about the watch.
Why do some listings have no year?
About one in three of our live Rolex listings does not state a year, and on our listings a missing year usually goes with a watch that has no card or papers. Ask the watch desk what the year is read from before you decide.
Can I see the watch on video?

Can I pick up an online order at the showroom?
Our shipping policy sets out the steps for in-store pick up: "Email verify@traxnyc.com for approval." Then: "Wait for email confirmation before visiting." And: "Original cardholder must bring ID and the card used for purchase." The full steps are on our shipping policy page.
