How to buy men's diamond wedding bands

One row or eternity, the setting, the metal and the size, settled before you pay

Settle one row or all the way round before anything else. A single row of diamonds across the top leaves plain metal underneath, so a jeweler can still size the band, and more than half the bands here are built that way. Take channel if you work with your hands, and 14K for every day. Know your size before you order, because a resized band cannot come back.

Find your ring size in a minute

Your screen becomes the sizer. On most phones it is already true size, and a quarter lets you check. Then measure the finger you will wear the ring on, with a ring that already fits that finger or with a strip of paper.

1. Check the screen with a quarter

Lay a quarter flat on the screen, over the coin, and move the slider until the coin on the screen is exactly the size of yours. No quarter? Then the circle and the ruler are not to scale: measure your paper strip with a real ruler and set that number in millimeters on the strip slider, then send it to the desk.

2. Measure

Take a ring that fits the same finger of the same hand the new ring will live on; every finger is its own size. Set it on the screen over the circle and move the slider until the circle just fills the inside of the ring.

Between two sizes? Take the one that passes the knuckle and sits snug below it. A wide band, 8 mm and up, fits tighter, so go up a half size. Measure at the end of the day, at room temperature.

Settings: channel, prong, bezel or pave on a men's diamond band

Take a channel setting for a hand that works. The stones sit flush in a groove between two metal rails, so nothing catches. Prong holds each stone in small claws and lets the most light in, and it is the setting you see most here. Have the claws checked once a year. A bezel wraps each stone in a collar of metal, the safest. Pave packs small stones tight for the most sparkle and asks the most care. Take any band off for the gym. A soft brush and soapy water bring the shine back.

Rows: one row, several rows or an eternity band

Buy one row if your size could ever change. The stones run across the top, the back stays plain, and a jeweler has metal to cut. A channel row stretches less than a prong row, since the rails pinch. An eternity band carries stones the whole way around, and most jewelers cannot resize one, so measure twice. A half eternity gives you the look with a bare back. Five bands here double as men's engagement rings.

Carats: total carat weight on a men's wedding band

The carat on a band is every stone added together, not one diamond. The middle band here that states a total sits just under a carat. Over a channel, one carat is five to nine small stones in a line of light. For a band that shows across the table, look between one and two carats.

Lab-grown or natural, both are real diamond. One grows in a lab, the other comes out of the ground. Every diamond band prints its origin, natural on 56 and lab-grown on 5.

Metal: 14K, 18K or platinum, and what a men's band weighs

Take 14K for a band worn every day. About four in five bands here are 14K. 18K is a warmer yellow and marks sooner. Platinum is the heaviest and the whitest, with no plating to renew. White gold is plated and gets a fresh coat when it wears thin.
