How to buy men's diamond rings

Find your ring size in a minute

Your screen becomes the sizer. On most phones it is already true size, and a quarter lets you check. Then measure the finger you will wear the ring on, with a ring that already fits that finger or with a strip of paper.

1. Check the screen with a quarter

Lay a quarter flat on the screen, over the coin, and move the slider until the coin on the screen is exactly the size of yours. No quarter? Then the circle and the ruler are not to scale: measure your paper strip with a real ruler and set that number in millimeters on the strip slider, then send it to the desk.

2. Measure

Take a ring that fits the same finger of the same hand the new ring will live on; every finger is its own size. Set it on the screen over the circle and move the slider until the circle just fills the inside of the ring.

Between two sizes? Take the one that passes the knuckle and sits snug below it. A wide band, 8 mm and up, fits tighter, so go up a half size. Measure at the end of the day, at room temperature.

Read the origin line in the listing's details. All but a handful name lab-grown or natural, natural on most. On the few that are silent, ask the desk before you pay.

Is it okay for a man to wear a diamond ring?

Most menus carry 9 to 11 with the half sizes, and size 10 is on nearly four in five. One listing in four goes under 6 or over 12, so read the menu first. If yours is missing, ask the desk.

Do men wear yellow gold or white gold diamond rings?

Color and clarity: most diamonds are graded F to H in color and VS to SI in clarity; some rings are set with black diamonds.
Natural or lab-grown: most rings carry natural diamonds and some carry lab-grown diamonds; the listing says which.
Metal: most are 14K gold, then 10K, sterling silver, 18K and platinum; most gold rings come in yellow, white or rose gold.
