How to tell if a Rolex is real: the checks, what a video shows, and what needs a watchmaker
by TraxNYC
From the counter at TraxNYC, 47th Street.
The short answer
- No single check proves a Rolex is real. Good fakes pass the easy ones. Check the seller and the papers, then the watch, and let a watchmaker open the case when it matters.
- What a close look shows: crisp dial print, a date lens that magnifies two and a half times, the name engraved around the inner ring on newer models, and a sweeping seconds hand.
- What needs a watchmaker: the numbers between the lugs on older pieces, and the movement inside, where a good fake gives itself away.
- Buying from us: every Rolex we list is pre-owned and nearly every listing gives the reference. Watches are final sale, so ask for a video before you pay.

How to tell if a Rolex is real: the checks, one by one
Start with the seller. A price far under the market for the reference is the first warning, and a seller who cannot name the reference and the year is the second. Then the watch itself:
| The check | On a real Rolex | Can a video show it? |
|---|---|---|
| The dial | Print sharp under a loupe, evenly spaced; markers straight | Yes, up close |
| The date lens | The Cyclops magnifies the date two and a half times; the number fills it | Yes |
| The inner ring | ROLEX engraved around the inner ring between the dial and the crystal, the serial at 6 o'clock, on most models since the late 2000s | Yes, up close |
| The crystal | A tiny crown etched near 6 o'clock on most models since the early 2000s, seen with a loupe | Sometimes |
| The seconds hand | Eight small steps a second on a modern movement, almost smooth | Yes |
| The bezel | Turns the way the model's should: a Submariner one way in 120 clicks, a GMT-Master II both ways in 24, a fluted Datejust not at all | Yes |
| The case back | Plain and solid on most models | Yes |
| The bracelet | Solid links, crisp engraving on the clasp; a cheap fake feels light | Partly |
| The numbers | Serial and reference between the lugs on older pieces, seen with the bracelet off | No: a watchmaker |
| The movement | A Rolex caliber, such as the 3235 in a current Datejust or Submariner Date, with Rolex finishing | No: the case must be opened |
General watch knowledge, not a store process or a promise. Features change by reference and year.
A hand that ticks once a second means quartz; apart from a few old models such as the Oysterquartz, Rolex watches are mechanical. A sweep proves little alone, because good fakes sweep too.
A see-through case back is a warning on the classic Oyster models, but a few recent references have one: check the reference first.
What a video can show, and what it cannot
A good video in daylight shows the outside: the dial, the date lens, the inner ring, the bezel clicks and the sweep. Ask for the watch to be turned slowly under the light.
A video cannot weigh the watch or read the movement. The best fakes copy the outside closely; the movement is where they give themselves away, and seeing it means opening the case, which is a watchmaker's job. Where each number sits and what it tells you: Rolex serial and reference numbers.
Papers, the box and service records
Papers help: the warranty card should carry the watch's serial, and a service receipt from a Rolex service center or a known watchmaker, with the serial on it, supports it further.
Papers do not prove a watch. Cards and boxes are copied too, so read them with the watch, never instead of it; and a watch without its card is still the watch.
A diamond dial or bezel added after the watch left the factory is a separate question from real or fake, but it changes the watch's value in the trade. Our listings say so when a part is aftermarket.
From the counter
“The jewelry business is about trust. You will not learn everything there is to know before you buy, so buy from someone who will still be around, and who treats you with dignity. I have seen customers start over with a new jeweler because they picked the one who fooled them best: the one who made them feel good at the counter and bad once they understood what they bought.”
Buying a Rolex from us
Every Rolex we list is pre-owned. Nearly every listing gives the reference number, and about two in three state the year, counted September 28, 2026. Nearly every description says whether the card or papers come with it. How to read a listing: buying a pre-owned Rolex.
Tap "Text a watch specialist" on the listing, or text 212-872-9692, and ask for a video of the dial, the inner ring, the clasp and the case sides.
Watches are final sale. Our refund policy lists "Watches" among the items that are "strictly non-returnable and non-refundable", and adds: "These exclusions are absolute and apply regardless of condition or wear." Settle every question before you pay.

Questions we hear at the counter
Can a jeweler tell if a Rolex is fake?
Often from the outside, with the checks above and a loupe. For certain, a watchmaker opens the case and reads the movement.
Do fake Rolexes tick?
Cheap ones with quartz movements tick once a second. Good fakes carry mechanical movements that sweep, so a sweep alone proves nothing.
Does a real Rolex have a clear case back?
Most do not. A few recent references do; the reference number tells you whether the watch in front of you should.
Are Rolex papers proof that it is real?
No. Papers support a watch when the serial on them matches the watch, but cards are copied too.
Is TraxNYC connected to Rolex?
No. TraxNYC is an independent jeweler on 47th Street selling pre-owned watches, and is not affiliated with Rolex. Rolex and the model names are trademarks of Rolex.
