Rolex nicknames: Batman, Pepsi, Hulk, Root Beer, Bruce Wayne and the rest, and the reference behind each
by TraxNYC
From the counter at TraxNYC, 47th Street.
The short answer
- A Rolex nickname is the trade's name for a watch, usually for its colors. Batman is the blue and black bezel on the GMT-Master II, Pepsi the blue and red, and Hulk the green Submariner.
- The name is not on the watch. The reference is. One nickname can cover two references, and one reference can carry two names, so buy by the number.
- The letters after the number name the bezel. BLNR is blue and black, BLRO blue and red, GRNR gray and black, CHNR brown and black, LV green and LB blue.
- Most of our listings put the nickname in the title. Nearly all give the reference and what comes with the watch, and most give the year.

The nicknames are the trade's, not Rolex's; the bezel letters are Rolex's own codes.
GMT-Master II: Batman, Batgirl, Bruce Wayne, Zombie, Pepsi and Root Beer
The GMT-Master II carries the most nicknames because its bezel comes in two colors, one for the day hours and one for the night. On the 126710BLNR the name follows the bracelet too: on the three-link Oyster it is the Batman, on the five-link Jubilee the Batgirl.
In gray and black, the steel 126710GRNR is the Bruce Wayne, the Batman with the blue gone, and the two-tone yellow gold 126713GRNR is the one buyers call the Zombie.

Submariner: Hulk, Starbucks, Kermit, Bluesy and Smurf
On the Submariner the names follow the dial and the bezel. Green on green is the Hulk. A green bezel on a black dial is the Kermit on the older 16610LV and the Starbucks on the 41 mm 126610LV. Blue on blue in two-tone yellow gold is the Bluesy; in 18K white gold, the Smurf.

The Wimbledon is a Datejust with a slate dial and green Roman numerals, named for the tennis championship whose green they echo. On our listings every one is a 41 mm, in steel, two-tone yellow gold or two-tone Everose gold.

Daytona: the John Mayer and the Panda
The John Mayer is the Cosmograph Daytona 116508 in 18K yellow gold with a green dial; the musician wore one and the name stuck. The Panda is the steel 116500LN, a white dial with black counters.

Buy the reference, not the nickname
A nickname is a handy way to ask for a watch, but it is not printed on the dial or the card. The reference is. One name can cover two generations, as the Batman covers the 116710BLNR and the 126710BLNR.
Read the listing for the reference first, then the year and what comes with it; our pre-owned Rolex guide shows how. Watches are final sale under our refund policy, so ask for a video before you pay.
From the counter
“The Diamond District holds things most people never get to see: rare watches, extraordinary gems, gold, silver and pieces people have collected for years. It is a great place to buy, if you know how to do business, you do not get fooled and you deal with the right people. That is why we make it friendly. A friendly, knowledgeable business is what we are building here.”

Questions about Rolex nicknames
Why is it called the Batman Rolex?
For its bezel: blue and black, the comic-book hero's colors. It is the GMT-Master II 126710BLNR on the Oyster bracelet, and the 116710BLNR before it.
What is the Batgirl Rolex?
The same GMT-Master II 126710BLNR, blue and black bezel, on the five-link Jubilee bracelet instead of the Oyster. The bracelet is the whole difference.
What is the Pepsi Rolex?
The GMT-Master II with a blue and red bezel, the soda's colors. The current steel reference is the 126710BLRO.
What is the Rolex Hulk?
The Submariner Date 116610LV: green dial and green bezel. The 126610LV that followed it has the green bezel on a black dial, and buyers call it the Starbucks.
What is the Bruce Wayne Rolex?
The steel GMT-Master II 126710GRNR, with a gray and black bezel: the Batman with the blue gone, so buyers named it for the man behind the mask.
