How to choose a women's gemstone ring
Pick the stone for how often she wears it, then the gold or silver and the setting
Start with how often she will wear it. Sapphire and ruby are hard enough for every day, so begin there for an engagement ring. Opal is soft and wants a gentler hand, yet opals were about half of what sold here, most of them light silver rings. Set in 14K gold, a stone stays tight for years. Few listings say whether the colored stone is natural, so ask us.

Find your ring size in a minute
Your screen becomes the sizer. Set it with a bank card, then measure the finger you will wear the ring on, with a ring that already fits that finger or with a strip of paper.
1. Set the screen with a card
Lay any bank, debit or ID card flat on the screen, standing tall, so its short edge runs across the box, and move the slider until the box is exactly as wide as the card. No bank card? A driver's license, metro card, gift card or hotel key is the same size. Without any card the circle and the ruler are not to scale: measure your paper strip with a real ruler and set that number in millimeters on the strip slider, then send it to the desk.
2. Measure
Take a ring that fits the same finger of the same hand the new ring will live on; every finger is its own size. Set it on the screen over the circle and move the slider until the circle just fills the inside of the ring.

Wrap a strip of paper snug around the base of the finger, where the ring sits, and mark where it meets. If your knuckle is bigger, wrap it there too and take a size between the two, nearer the knuckle. Lay the strip along the ruler's right edge from the 0. Move the slider until the gold line sits on your mark.

Between two sizes? Take the one that passes the knuckle and sits snug below it. A wide band, 8 mm and up, fits tighter, so go up a half size. Measure at the end of the day, at room temperature.

What is the best gemstone for a ring worn every day?
Sapphire or ruby holds up best. Each scores 9 for hardness, a step below diamond, so daily knocks and scratches barely touch it. Topaz, amethyst and garnet are fine most days, while opal, pearl and emerald want gentler wear.
Are the gemstones in these rings natural or lab-created?
Few listings say, so check with us before ordering. Where a description names it, the colored stone is natural, and one alexandrite solitaire is synthetic, as its title states. Many sapphires, rubies and emeralds are heated or oiled for color.
Can I wear an opal ring every day?
You can, with care, but an opal is not a ring for rough work. The stone is soft and can crack, so remove it before a workout or a swim, and keep perfume and ultrasonic cleaners away from it.

Most run from size 4 or 5 up to 8 or 9, with the half sizes on nearly every ring. A handful come in a single size, and the opal pinky ring runs smaller, for the little finger. Ask us for a missing size.
Is a gemstone ring a good choice for an engagement ring?
It is, when the stone is hard enough for daily wear, so choose sapphire or ruby. The colored solitaires here are light 14K rings. A softer stone such as amethyst or opal suits a ring she will not wear every single day.
Should I choose 14K gold or sterling silver for a gemstone ring?
Choose 14K gold for a ring she wears often, since it holds the stone tight for years. Silver is lighter and suits a fashion ring, like the silver opals bought most here, but it darkens and wears down faster.
Is an emerald cut ring the same as an emerald ring?
