Are black diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. A black diamond is real diamond, packed with so many dark inclusions, mostly graphite, that no light gets through, which is why it looks opaque. Natural, treated or lab-grown, it is still diamond, the hardest stone there is. On this page, 41 of the 61 titles name a black diamond. Nine never say it in title or description, the two estate rings and the black star sapphire ring among them, so read each listing.
Are black diamonds natural, treated or lab-grown?
Any of the three, and most listings here do not say which. Eight of the 61 rings live on this page state an origin: three are marked natural, three lab-grown, and two more say natural in their descriptions. None says treated, and 53 say nothing. In the trade, natural black diamond is scarce; a good deal of what sells as black starts as low-grade white diamond turned black by heat or irradiation, and grown black stones are made too. For your ring, ask the desk before you pay.
Why don't black diamonds sparkle like white ones?
Because a black diamond absorbs light instead of returning it. A white diamond is cut so light enters, bounces inside and comes back out as sparkle. A black one is opaque, so what you see is light glancing off its polished facets: a flat, dark look in daylight and tiny points of light under a lamp. That is why black stones so often sit beside white ones: the white flashes, the black frames it, and five titles here pair the two.
What is a black gold ring, and does the black wear off?
It is gold with a dark finish on top, and yes, the black wears. No gold alloy is black; the finish is usually black rhodium or ruthenium, sometimes oxidized or PVD. It thins at the edges until the gold shows, and a jeweler renews it. Three listings here say black gold: a 10K eternity ring, a 7 row ring and a 5 row prong ring. None names the finish; ask the desk what it is and whether the bench renews it.
Are black diamonds tough enough for a ring worn every day?
Yes, with one caution. Diamond is the hardest stone, so a black one shrugs off scratches better than onyx, a far softer quartz, or any other black stone. The caution is chipping: a heavily included or treated black stone can be more brittle than a white diamond. A hard knock on a prong-set stone is the risk; a channel or bezel guards it.
